chioggia beet of my heart | thyme, and everything else

https://thymeandeverythingelse.wordpress.com/2016/10/14/chiogga-beet-of-my-heart

Thyme, and everything else. More than recipes, stories about food. Chioggia beet of my heart. October 14, 2016. November 15, 2016. Everyday, ordinary beets. Last Friday I had a glorious few minutes to spare. I was in the area, this market no longer being the closest to me, so decided to stop. Parking and walking up to the entrance, I was immediately reminded of what I missed. Chanterelles, golden treasure of the forest. The Chioggias – note: they are named after a city in Italy were scrubbed lightl...

Thyme, and everything else. More than recipes, stories about food. Thanksgiving, and there will be pie! November 20, 2016. December 2, 2016. Cranberry pie, one part tang one part sweet = perfect. Funny thing happened. I spent some time the last couple of days writing a blog post, only to have one I wrote this time last year pop up on my Facebook share your memories. It was way too similar, all about turkey or sides. Anyway, those 500 words got ditched in lieu of the dessert board. For our big family gath...

Thyme, and everything else. More than recipes, stories about food. Green salmon and community gardens. August 22, 2016. August 30, 2016. How does your garden grow? If you happen to be a person who reads both of my blogs – the other being Isabella Bird Miscellany. You’ll know that my summer has been packed with short getaways. Taking an extended vacation is fabulous when time and dollars allow; when that’s not in the cards, sneaking away for a day or two feeds the desire for exploration. August 8, 2016.

Thyme, and everything else. More than recipes, stories about food. When it comes to pizza, I’m kind of a snob. July 25, 2016. August 3, 2016. Clam and kale pizza. If I say pizza what pops in your head? Visions of a pie topped with red sauce and tons of pepperoni that’s drowning in cheese? Yeah, for a lot of you and you know who you are, that’s exactly the picture you conjure up. I wouldn’t quite say that I’m a pizza snob, but, I kind of am. Lemon and blueberry icebox cake. Isabella Bird Miscellany: winter picture book

http://isabellabird.blogspot.com/2017/01/winter-picture-book.html

Monday, January 9, 2017. I've always said that I'm a "dial-a-season" girl. Leaves and gorgeous colors in the fall, and I like snow at Christmas because, well, it's supposed to be snowy then,. Unless you live in Australia. Christmas in the summer does mess with you head when you've always experienced Christmas in the winter. Seasons just don't work on my personal whims! I've always said that I'm a "dial-a-season" girl. Anyway, I'm trying really hard to embrace all of the white stuff. Near our house is a l...

Isabella Bird Miscellany: September 2016

http://isabellabird.blogspot.com/2016_09_01_archive.html

Monday, September 26, 2016. Walking on the path I noticed the pebbles. I stopped and picked one up, holding it in my hand to feel it’s texture. Tiny and smooth, it felt warm from the sun. Continuing on my walk, the way was scattered with pebbles of different shapes and sizes; some flat and polished, others round and craggy with sharp edges that could cut the skin. No matter, all were pebbles; that was fact. Monday, September 12, 2016. Road tripping: french glen and steens mountain. Is that lame, or what?

Isabella Bird Miscellany: January 2017

http://isabellabird.blogspot.com/2017_01_01_archive.html

Monday, January 23, 2017. Snow, dependency and freedom. I’m out. I’m free. I drove. I’m capable. My sweet zombie apocalypse Mini Cooper is awesome! It tears up the snow and ice like the Wulfe that it is, however, the beauty and the curse of my ride is the low ground clearance. It’s brilliant for stability in a myriad of road conditions, except for deep snow, and deep snow has happened in my city. My sweet wulfe before the snow continued and continued and continued. Today, Friday (the actual day this post...

Isabella Bird Miscellany: silence, can you hear?

http://isabellabird.blogspot.com/2016/12/silence-can-you-hear.html

Tuesday, December 20, 2016. Silence, can you hear? Frozen drips waiting for release. It’s still dark outside. White lights on the Christmas tree reflect off the dangling colored ornaments. Stock simmers on the stove. Drips can be heard outside; it’s the first day in a week above freezing. Yesterday, I posted a graphic I’d saved. It simply read,. 8220;Silence calms my soul.”. Isabella Bird Miscellany: soft season, advent

http://isabellabird.blogspot.com/2016/11/soft-season-advent.html

Wednesday, November 30, 2016. Soft season, advent. Winter seeds, all is not dormant. Soft season of quiet anticipation, blankets with mist and snow. Preparing for the dormant time. Sweet solitude balms the weary, all is in calm repose. Patient and silent in winter’s rest. Come gentle season of peace and stillness, envelope in candlelight and flickering fire. Welcome Counselor, welcome Advent. I am quiet. I am anticipating. I am waiting for things to come into being. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Isabella Bird Miscellany: we left the city

http://isabellabird.blogspot.com/2016/11/life-in-crack-we-left-city-yesterday.html

Thursday, November 17, 2016. We left the city. Life in a crack. We left the city yesterday, wet leaves covered sidewalks; brown and at the end of their season. It had been nice to walk neighborhoods, dart into cafes for coffee or a drink. It was grey in a melancholy sort of way, with a fresh breeze. Being reminded of traffic, activity, and people. The places we gravitate filled with the not-mainstream people. I’m intrigued with their stories and thoughts, often different from mine. With a nod of dignity.

Isabella Bird Miscellany: October 2016

http://isabellabird.blogspot.com/2016_10_01_archive.html

Friday, October 21, 2016. Lesson from a brown dog. Things toss us around, messing with our peaceful being; big stuff and small irritations. You know that unsettled or just plain angry attitude that can drape us like a wet blanket. Yeah, that one, and I was wearing it – not sure why, but I was. Lesson from a brown dog: we are held securely and talked to in a soothing voice when the loud speaker is blaring. My girl needs reassurance and security, and I’m wearing that disturbed, irritating wet blanket...

Isabella Bird Miscellany: with a nod of dignity

http://isabellabird.blogspot.com/2015/10/with-nod-of-dignity.html

Tuesday, October 6, 2015. With a nod of dignity. With a nod of dignity, he pulled her close. People driving by without even looking; it’s too risky, so just don’t look. Funny, and not in a good way, how that dignity and pride. Stood out beyond the destitute. Standing on that corner, all too familiar cardboard sign in hand. Clothed in dirt from the street. A common sight has become our normal; we go by without a passing thought. These people were different. Homelessness has a face. Stepping out of comfort.

thyme, and everything else | more than recipes, stories about food

Thyme, and everything else. More than recipes, stories about food. And then … there was soup. January 4, 2017. It’s cold, and i need soup. I must admit some mighty fine food graced the get togethers I hosted or attended. And, not all of it was the rich, decadent, over-the-top stuff that you just can’t stop eating no matter how hard you try. Needless to say though, there was plenty to keep Santa round and jolly. Fudge would fall in the totally decadent catagory. Said recipe was Healthy-ish Chickpea Soup.

Thyme & Ginger – A Scientist in the Kitchen

A Scientist in the Kitchen. Chicken Cauliflower Fried “Rice”. Cauliflower “rice” has started popping up with increasing regularity on Tastespotting. I used The Kitchn’s. Instructions to rice my cauliflower and that took just 5 minutes in my food processor. It took longer to core and cut the cauliflower and then to wash the food processor than to actually rice the cauliflower. And I had enough riced cauliflower to make this meal (2 servings) and still have leftovers for another day…. Read More ».

Thyme & Honey

A Road Trip Through Italy. August 28, 2015. In mid-August I took a backpack, my best friend and a camper van and drove over 1,500km through Italy. Without a real agenda or a specific route, we set off from Venice with the sole aim of trying to get as far south as possible in seven short days. Our ride was completely ridiculous, a 5-seater safari camper painted a mix of garish yellow and orange, emblazoned with 'assassins do it from behind' on the back. I pretend not to have completely loved it. Grating t...
