In the US, more than 300,000 people are diagnosed with Lyme disease each year. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report that the number of counties considered Lyme disease hotspots has risen from 69 in 1995 to 260 in 2012. March 6, 2016. Tick Project directors Felicia Keesing and Rick Ostfeld, pictured at right, were featured on National Public Radio today for their work on mice, ticks, and Lyme disease. They are predicting that 2017 will be a bad year for Lyme disease. You can read the story here. December 20, 2016. The study will take five years to complete. In 2016, we are identifying study neighborhoods and asking people who live in them to participate in the study. The selected study neighborhoods have been identified as hotspots for Lyme disease by the research team and their partners at the Dutchess County Department of Behavioral and Community Health. In the summer of 2016, we will also be estimating the abundance of ticks on some of the properties before we begin treating them.
