Pen, Spoon and Dagger. The ramblings of a food-obsessed techie and aspiring mystery writer. 28 March, 2014. Fiction Friday: Agents and Editors can Make or Break a Conference. Arriving at the gorgeous venue — St. Clement' Castle — I was reminded of how much I enjoy to opportunity to mingle with other writers, swapping experiences and war stories. I find I'm far less attracted by sessions than opportunities for critiques and personal interaction. I had signed up for one review, but after the editor panel (...

Pen, Spoon and Dagger. The ramblings of a food-obsessed techie and aspiring mystery writer. 11 August, 2014. Why Every Writer Needs a Puppy. Strange though it may sound, I believe a puppy to be an invaluable tool to all writers, particularly those just getting started. What are some of the basics you need as a writer? Regular breaks from your computer to refresh your mind and body. Six weeks ago I rescued a 9-month old Golden Retriever and rechristned him Murphy. Want to see unharnessed energy? Run an un...

Pen, Spoon and Dagger. The ramblings of a food-obsessed techie and aspiring mystery writer. 15 April, 2014. Tasty Tuesday: Rosemary for Remembrance and Bread. As for rosemary, I let it run all over my garden walls, not only because my bees love it but because it is the herb sacred to remembrance and to friendship, whence a sprig of it hath a dumb language. Rosemary holds a special place in my heart, perhaps because I graduated from Rosemary Hall, or maybe because it is such a beautiful, versatile herb.

Pen, Spoon and Dagger. The ramblings of a food-obsessed techie and aspiring mystery writer. 18 September, 2013. Tastey Tuesday: Confessions of a Foodie. I have a confession to make: I've never eaten macaroni and cheese from a box. Does that sound heretical? I can't explain how it happened, it just did. Ramen noodles, hamburger helper, Shake and Bake, those I've all tasted. Confession #2: I love Ramen noodles. What about your family? Any hand-me-down recipes that differ from the norm? 115 oz can V-8 juice.

Pen, Spoon and Dagger. The ramblings of a food-obsessed techie and aspiring mystery writer. 18 November, 2013. Fiction Friday: Teaching an Old Writer New Tricks w/ Scrivener II. Well, it seems my optimism about being finished with revisions was just that: optimism. Agent has requested more changes before she'll consider offering a contract. But that's okay, with Scrivener, the problem areas will be simple to find and the changes quick (I hope) to make. The arrows show where I've planted a red herring and...

Pen, Spoon and Dagger. The ramblings of a food-obsessed techie and aspiring mystery writer. 29 October, 2013. Fiction Friday:Rejection: the Good, the Bad, and the. As an unpublished writer there's one reality I have to face: rejection. And no matter how much I (and my published friends) repeat that everyone has been rejected by agents, it doesn't seem to get any easier. The worst part, for me at least, is that the vast majority of agents don't tell you why they're rejecting your manuscript. Like many Gup...

Pen, Spoon and Dagger. The ramblings of a food-obsessed techie and aspiring mystery writer. 25 April, 2014. Fiction Friday: In Search of a Job. A couple of months ago I received a letter from an agent I'd queried. She began by telling me how much she enjoyed my writing and my voice. I was elated. Then she proceeded to tell me that she was passing on my manuscript because she didn't feel she could sell it in the current cozy market because the protagonist wasn't original enough. House Keeper, Cleaner, Maid.

Pen, Spoon and Dagger. The ramblings of a food-obsessed techie and aspiring mystery writer. 17 July, 2015. A Practical Guide to Hosting a Writing Retreat. Writing retreats are, in my opinion, one of the greatest treats for any author. Having just hosted one here in Vermont, I thought I'd share some of the lessons I learned. First off, there are three main things writers:. And not always in that order. Provide a Quiet Space. Wi-Fi is a plus, so is a sharable printer. Everyone should be quiet. Share the Ch...
