HTTP Public-Key-Pinning explained - The what, why, and how of RFC 7469 - Tim Taubert
https://timtaubert.de/blog/2014/10/http-public-key-pinning-explained
The what, why, and how of RFC 7469. In my last post “Deploying TLS the hard way”. I explained how TLS and its extensions (as well as a few HTTP extensions) work and what to watch out for when enabling TLS for your server. One of the HTTP extensions mentioned is HTTP Public-Key-Pinning (HPKP). As a short reminder, the header looks like this:. Public-Key-Pins: pin-sha256=GRAH5Ex kB4cCQi5gMU82urf 6kEgbVtzfCSkw55AGk=; pin-sha256=lERGk61FITjzyKHcJ89xpc6aDwtRkOPAU0jdnUqzW2s=; max-age=15768000; includeSubDomains.
Generating .onion names for Tor hidden services - Tinkering with the WebCrypto API - Tim Taubert
https://timtaubert.de/blog/2014/11/using-the-webcrypto-api-to-generate-onion-names-for-tor-hidden-services
Generating .onion names for Tor hidden services. Tinkering with the WebCrypto API. You have probably read that Facebook unveiled its hidden service. That lets users access their website more safely via Tor. While there are lots of opinions about whether this is good or bad I think that the Tor project described best why that is not as crazy as it seems. The most interesting part to me however is that Facebook brute-forced a custom hidden service address. If that is still unknown territory to you. You can...
Botching Forward Secrecy - The sad state of server-side TLS Session Resumption implementations - Tim Taubert
https://timtaubert.de/blog/2014/11/the-sad-state-of-server-side-tls-session-resumption-implementations
The sad state of server-side TLS Session Resumption implementations. The probably oldest complaint about TLS is that its handshake is slow and together with the transport encryption has a lot of CPU overhead. This certainly is not true anymore. One of the most important features to improve user experience for visitors accessing your site via TLS is session resumption. Session resumption. Enabling session resumption in web servers and proxies can however easily compromise forward secrecy. Cheaper we can u...
Deploying TLS the hard way - Configuring HTTPS for your domain(s) - Tim Taubert
https://timtaubert.de/blog/2014/10/deploying-tls-the-hard-way
Deploying TLS the hard way. Configuring HTTPS for your domain(s). How does TLS work? Choosing the right cipher suites. HTTP Strict Transport Security. HTTP Public Key Pinning. Last weekend I finally deployed TLS for. To follow this post you will need some basic cryptography knowledge. Whenever you do not know or understand a concept you should probably just head over to Wikipedia and take a few minutes or just do it later and maybe re-read the whole thing. But didn’t Andy say this is all shit? Too and I ...

https://timtaubert.de/blog/2015/05/implementing-a-pbkdf2-based-password-storage-scheme-for-firefox-os
A Firefox OS password storage. PBKDF2 and the WebCrypto API in the wild. My esteemed colleague Frederik Braun. Recently took on to rewrite the module responsible for storing and checking passcodes that unlock Firefox OS phones. While we are still working on actually landing it in Gaia. I wanted to seize the chance to talk about this great use case of the WebCrypto API. In the wild and highlight a few important points when using password-based key derivation (PBKDF2). To write a new code to disk. Convert ...

The Cathedral and the Bazaar. The Cathedral and the Bazaar. Is an autobiographical story by Eric Steven Raymond about his endeavor into the world of Bazaar style programming. Bazaar style programing as he explains, is the style in which Linux was created by Linus Torvalds. Involve as many people as possible. His story bases itself around the mail client he started working on the the 90’s that would become known as fetchmail. Raymond argues the Bazaar style is better and I would have to agree with him.

PhiliKON – a journal. Philipp on software and other interesting things. A Mozilla and Open Source success story. December 14, 2011. There are many success stories like this in open source, but this is such a neat one, I have to call it out. It basically goes like this:. Goes through the seven circles of hell (XPCOM). Submits a patch. Goes through several review iterations. Patch gets committed. Bobby Holley tells the whole story in his blog post. It’s short and worth a read. My take on webOS and Mozilla.

PhiliKON – a journal. Philipp on software and other interesting things. The future of BarTab. December 2, 2011. BarTab has a faithful user base. Every day I get emails that look approximately like this:. Thing is, I made BarTab when I was a grad student because it was something I and Firefox needed at the time. Things have changed. I no longer am a grad student with lots of disposable time (yeah, right) and frankly, there are more important things at stake in Firefox land. Firefox is stepping up. Decembe...
