Library Media Specialist Help Desk. Sharing information between Library Media Specialists. Thursday, March 28, 2013. No More Dewey - Part 4. To help the students find books we put in dividers made out of foam board. We put plastic bookend shelf dividers to mark the beginning of each section. Ms. Kelly at the Library: Fizz, Boom, Read!: Catapult Science
http://mskellyatthelibrary.blogspot.com/2014/08/fizz-boom-read-catapult-science.html
Thursday, August 14, 2014. Fizz, Boom, Read! Next on my list of SRP programs to catch readers up on is the Catapult Science program I did for Grades 3-6. I originally got the idea for this program. From Lisa Mulvenna of Lisa's Libraryland. I knew it would be a fun and easy program to do for this summer's theme and definitely wanted to give it a try. After that, I guided the kids in building their catapults. Some even created mock castle walls after hearing how catapults used to be used in warfare. The se...

Ms. Kelly at the Library: Counting Ramp: Our new early literacy center
http://mskellyatthelibrary.blogspot.com/2015/05/counting-ramp-our-new-early-literacy.html
Tuesday, May 5, 2015. Counting Ramp: Our new early literacy center. My library has a ramp leading into our children's area. The children's area is a few steps down from the center of the library, so the main purpose of the ramp has always been providing accessibility. It is an area of my department I've always had to keep a close eye on because the kids love to run up and down it. Until recently I have never thought of using it to promote early literacy. Our "Counting Ramp" was the result:. The sign deta...

Ms. Kelly at the Library: American Girl Club: Meet Isabelle
http://mskellyatthelibrary.blogspot.com/2014/02/american-girl-club-meet-isabelle.html
Monday, February 24, 2014. American Girl Club: Meet Isabelle. The girls often bring their dolls, but it is definitely not required. The dolls usually end up sitting to the side and watching the rest of the festivities. We start each meeting by talking about the girl's time period and books. I always ask who has read the books, and what they know about the time period. Reading the books is not a requirement by any means, but I usually have a least one girl who has. We played "Pass the Dance" first. In...

Ms. Kelly at the Library: June 2015
http://mskellyatthelibrary.blogspot.com/2015_06_01_archive.html
Saturday, June 27, 2015. Every Hero Has a Story: Who is your hero? Ever since I took an early childhood related webinar through MLA about two months ago, I've been thinking about how to provide literacy building activities on every available library surface. I created our counting ramp. And am planning on adding a Lego board and a flannel board to the sides of our shelves. For summer reading I wanted to come up with a literacy building passive program that kids of all ages could enjoy. I'd love to hear a...
