Open Maps: Not Alone
http://chris-osm.blogspot.com/2015/05/not-alone.html
Making not just the best free map, but the best map. Thursday, 21 May 2015. I went out looking for new developments in East Yorkshire today. Looks like I was not alone. How many StreetView companies do you have in UK? As long as I know there are two active StreetView providers in the Czech republic: Google and Seznam (local mixture of Google and Yahoo). 25 May 2015 at 20:14. 25 May 2015 at 20:28. Of course I know Mapillary (and already contributed ;-) ). 25 May 2015 at 22:29. 26 May 2015 at 09:30. Like m...

UK MAMBO - Live or Die Trying: Equipment - Bike
http://ukmambo.blogspot.com/p/equipment-bike.html
UK MAMBO - Live or Die Trying. A Slightly Tongue In Cheek Look At Middle Aged Cycling. So what drives a MAMBO’s decision to buy? Here was my thinking:. Needs to be of a higher specification than average (say 75 – 80%) but not too expensive as that would be naff (uncool). Besides have you seen the price of the top of the range stuff! Tricky one here – but to be honest I do take into account safety – are those lights bright enough or the jacket green enough. Does it all match! Are you a modern or retro per...

Open Maps: November 2014
http://chris-osm.blogspot.com/2014_11_01_archive.html
Making not just the best free map, but the best map. Saturday, 29 November 2014. Three years on and the planning application has been turned down by the local authority and there's an enquiry under way. Enquiries like this seem pointless to me, everyone knows the dice is heavily loaded in favour of the developers, so why waste millions on an enquiry that will ultimately allow the development to go ahead anyway? We need new houses. Links to this post. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Weekly OSM Summary #66.

Open Maps: February 2014
http://chris-osm.blogspot.com/2014_02_01_archive.html
Making not just the best free map, but the best map. Tuesday, 25 February 2014. I went out to buy some seeds for the allotment today. On the way home deliberately drove home down Hawthorn Avenue in Hull to see the point where Woodcock Street joins it. Well done Hull City Council, eventually. Links to this post. Saturday, 1 February 2014. Looking at changesets can be useful, but apart from trying to work out which of the so-called big edits to ignore, there's the bigger problem of knowing what has actuall...

Open Maps: September 2013
http://chris-osm.blogspot.com/2013_09_01_archive.html
Making not just the best free map, but the best map. Thursday, 12 September 2013. I have been impressed with SK53's use of open data. In Nottingham, so I thought I'd see what was available for my home county of the East Riding of Yorkshire and for nearby Hull. The answer has been disappointing and frustrating. That includes a list of registered food premises. The art of politics is to give a response to a question that wasn't asked, but that you can answer. Links to this post. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

Open Maps: Lock in
http://chris-osm.blogspot.com/2014/09/lock-in.html
Making not just the best free map, but the best map. Tuesday, 9 September 2014. I went to The Jacobs Homes off Askew Avenue. The place was complete, smart. When I got to Cottingham Road shops I took lots of photos of the shop fronts from across the street, got asked what I was doing and handed out a leaflet about OSM. When I'd done my shopping I set off for home. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). How far are Hedgehogs from a road? Weekly OSM Summary #66. Like maps, especially OpenStreetMap. Anythin...

Open Maps: Heights
http://chris-osm.blogspot.com/2015/05/heights.html
Making not just the best free map, but the best map. Friday, 8 May 2015. I've been working on something locally for a while that benefits from maps. It needs height information displayed so I thought I'd take a closer look at what was available, especially Digital Elevation Model (DEM) data. OSM doesn't hold much height information, so when people want to display heights they turn to outside information. One such source is Shuttle Radar Topography Mission data. More of what to do with it later. For i in ...

Open Maps: Heights & OS
http://chris-osm.blogspot.com/2015/05/heights-os.html
Making not just the best free map, but the best map. Monday, 11 May 2015. Working with Digital Elevation Models (DEM) is an interesting extension to creating maps, which are usually a flat representation of part of the world. I really want to find a way to show elevation in a way that is a bit different from a flat map. Working with the OS DEM data. Has whet my appetite to try something new, but first I need a map to work with. To create maps from OSM data. Createdb -E UTF8 EYOS. Armed with all of this I...

Making not just the best free map, but the best map. Monday, 16 February 2015. The US FAA has ruled that drones need to remain within sight of the operator. This is a major obstacle to companies planning deliveries in the US by drone. I had wondered what kind of mapping such an enterprise would need. Where would such a delivery be made? If the address has a garden then that might be useful, but what if there are plants or garden furniture in the way? How could a drone safely land on a sidewalk? CloudMade...
