I have been active on APRS, the Automatic Packet Reporting System since 2008. Rather than bore you with the details, take a look at wikipedia. Which explains all. If you are in the UK, M0CYP. Has a great site with lots of information on settings and how to use UI-VIEW, the most popular APRS software. I have two stations. One at home that runs as a fill indigi and I-gate and another remote tracker in my car. The antenna is only a 1/4 wave, but that seems to do just fine locally. Create a free website.

For the TNC I ultimately decided on the TNC-X. It is available in kit form, is inexpensive, supports the KISS protocol, has a USB interface, and has great reviews. I hadn't built a kit in probably 15 years, but I found this kit to be a simple build taking about an hour. For APRS software I chose Xastir.
