June | 2012 | toastedhobbits

Monthly Archives: June 2012. June 5, 2012 · 9:16 pm. The Queen’s birthday is a public holiday celebrated on the first Monday in June in New Zealand. Nothing special occurred, except people had a day off work, the busses didn’t run as often, and a prayer for the queen was said at church. This holiday is also celebrated in a few other British commonwealth countries, like Australia and Canada. Napier is a city on the coast, close to where the arrow is pointing. She was quite happy mixing the ingredients tog...

Monthly Archives: July 2012. July 16, 2012 · 3:30 pm. After an exam was finished, students were either euphoric and energetic, or (more commonly) zombie-like with harrowed faces. Often, the rest of the day was not spent studying. My housemates and I did some therapeutic cooking on our last exam day — we cooked up a feast and invited friends over to eat. There’s nothing like making a delicious meal and then eating a ton of it in good company. Raindrops are Falling on my Head. The End is Near.

Monthly Archives: April 2012. April 26, 2012 · 7:27 am. Here’s the Ode of Rememberance that was read, taken from Laurence Binyon’s poem For the Fallen:. They went with songs to the battle, they were young. Straight of limb, true of eyes, steady and aglow. They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted,. They fell with their faces to the foe. They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:. Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning,. There...

Monthly Archives: February 2012. February 28, 2012 · 4:33 am. Photos of the Farms. During International Orientation, we visited a dairy farm and a sheep farm, both owned and run by Massey University. The farms were picturesque: beautiful green rolling hills were highlighted by the sun, palm trees intermixed with angiosperms and gymnosperms provided a border to the fields, and in the distance the hills surrounding Manawatu were a shade-speckled backdrop. The next view we had was not as nice:. The sheep kn...

And then to Bolivia | rebeccabender

Just another WordPress.com site. And then to Bolivia. November 20, 2012. So, I have been a student member of Engineers Without Borders since I came to Michigan Tech – in fact, the fervent activity of the EWB chapter and the Peace Corps Masters International Program were two of the primary reasons that I chose this school. Since then, my private, subjective morality has come to view them both in a different light,. My appreciation for the people and interest in the projects involved has not waned a smidge.

Just another WordPress.com site. And then to Bolivia. Potties of Paisaje →. November 21, 2012. Our first day in-country was kind of a funny one. We made our way off the plane, staggering a bit from nine-hour-flight stiffness and in my case, hoping desperately that the splitting pressure headache that I had developed in the plane would not give me permanent damage, but scared because my hearing through the whole morning, even after landing, was probably twenty percent of what it usually is. Address never ...

Just another WordPress.com site. Making sense of a census. December 29, 2012. Wednesday awoke in Montero, Bolivia, and yet nothing moved. The boisterous city that had offered bustling markets, teeming restaurants, and an abundance of little shops the day before was silent, the sunny streets empty of cars and people. This sort of development blows my mind. I think about the sequencing of develoment in Europe, from the Roman aqueducts to John Snow and his cholera-water connection, it makes sense to my ...

Just another WordPress.com site. Making sense of a census →. November 24, 2012. Our first real work day was supposed to be construction, but an unbelievably soggy thunderstorm had flooded our rooms and made soup out of most of the roads we needed to reach La Banda and build bathroom walls. In addition to the bathrooms, people showed us casually around their property. There were homes made of adobe, brick, and even one made of reused motorcycle shipping crates. Most of the roofs were thatch, but t...In tr...

Just another WordPress.com site. And then to Bolivia →. November 19, 2012. Our iDesign team is a bit of a funny thing. We fell into our routine on day one, and fell into our roles pretty well by day three. This is my first blog. I have written some, talked much, and mused always, but never published. My impression of the 21st Century is that one must cultivate individuality while engaging as part of a global community; so here I am. View all posts by rebeccabender →. Just another WordPress.com site. Hard Body Engineering →. November 19, 2012. The four girls on my team spent two weeks in close and happy company. For two full days we stayed close to the other fourteen students in the class – studying the methods of surveying and GPS that we would use in the field, and searching out our project sites on the map with lumps in our throats. Ravenous, we pieced together some salsa and ate it with the chips we had bought at the Chino on our way. We planned the next day w...

Just another WordPress.com site. Newer posts →. August 14, 2012. Each day at Finca Paraiso Verde I would wake without an alarm clock, and those of you who have been with me for some time know that this in itself is probably a miracle. The sun rises in Costa Rica somewhere around 5:15am, and I caught it a number of happy mornings, when chattering birds would summon me gently to consciousness. There is so much more that I could say about my experience there in Londres, but I will leave it to the imaginatio...
