Friday, June 06, 2008. Makes Its Own Gravy. Eating your own dog food." The tech industry uses this phrase to mean one should actually use the software/hardware/wetware that one sells. For example, if everyone working at Microsoft used Mac's, that would be rather hypocritical. I've been developing a client website using a content management system (CMS) called Drupal. It is cool stuff and I may use it for other clients. In which case, I'd better walk the talk and use it on my own website. Your blog keeps ...

And Now A Word From...: April 2006

http://todd-wheeler.blogspot.com/2006_04_01_archive.html

Friday, April 28, 2006. It is a common question that is asked. It takes different forms, about discipline, routines, a room of one's own. It takes time to write, and that time has to be carved out of the day somewhere. I'm not an expert on managing time. Better minds. Have thought more deeply on the topic. We each have 24 hours a day. How will we manage it? Interviewer: And the level that follows sincerity? What do we call that? Posted by Todd Wheeler at 4/28/2006 06:39:00 AM. Friday, April 07, 2006.

And Now A Word From...: Writer RPG

http://todd-wheeler.blogspot.com/2008/01/writer-rpg.html

Friday, January 11, 2008. WARNING: Really long, geeky post! I enjoy playing all kinds of games: card games, board games, video games, MMORPGs. Writing requires choices and I have sacrificed time spent on games. Which is too bad because they're fun. Any type of work should have the potential for fun as well. Aspects of writing can be enjoyable, but also frustrating, heartbreaking, and misery inducing. Last December I wondered how I could make writing more fun like a game. Level 1 - Dilettante (0 - 999).

Monday, July 24, 2006. Dash, Dot, Dot . I don't get writer's block. Is that too proud to say? Putting words on the page isn't the problem. It's getting the butt in the chair that can be difficult. And once in the chair, getting started. The words are ready, but apparently I'm not. The web site 43 Folders. Has a lot of tips on managing work and managing time. This one. Suggests a method to alternate a flurry of work with short breaks. I had done that during National Novel Writing Month. Productivity was n...

http://todd-wheeler.blogspot.com/2006_09_01_archive.html

Monday, September 18, 2006. Despite spectacular success in my writing career, it just isn't paying the bills at the moment. Back to work a few nights a week. Early mornings are the best time for me to write. However, getting home at one or two in the morning makes it hard to get up at five. Nevermind maintaining anything close to a smile or a courteous word during the day. Posted by Todd Wheeler at 9/18/2006 08:22:00 PM. Monday, September 11, 2006. In The Right Place . ALOBIR: May 2007

http://alobir.blogspot.com/2007_05_01_archive.html

Tuesday, May 29, 2007. Something about books about garbage seems to inspire sub-titles. Or perhaps it is just a feature of non-fiction. This book uses "On The Secret Trail of Trash". With it, I seem to be mining, chronologically at least, a wealth of trashy information. Royte uses (or perhaps better is recycles - did I use that joke already? For sources, as well as the ever present EPA. Perhaps the most enlightening fact. Is that ". for every 100 pounds of product that's made - product that hits the ...

ALOBIR: July 2007

http://alobir.blogspot.com/2007_07_01_archive.html

Friday, July 27, 2007. Set in the shared universe of the Borderland. The main character, Orient, has a gift for finding things. This talent gets him drafted into a police investigation. Clues are followed, elves are implicated, innocents die, and the guilty get caught. This novel followed Bull's. Which had very clear gender bending issues and themes. With. Two books down, two thumbs up. Looks like I'll have to read all the rest by Ms. Bull. Thursday, July 12, 2007. Complete Food and Nutrition Guide.

ALOBIR: American Gods

http://alobir.blogspot.com/2007/12/american-gods.html

Saturday, December 15, 2007. Excellent novel. The conceit of gods being brought to America by the immigrants from around the world is done perfectly. I continue to be amazed by how well this English bloke portrays American characters and the landscape and culture of the U.S. I must address an issue as it was raised in the other blog and for better or worse stuck in my mind as I read. Is this a better book than. I'm going to punt and say it is a different book. But these are minor points. View my complete...

ALOBIR: March 2007

http://alobir.blogspot.com/2007_03_01_archive.html

Friday, March 30, 2007. Author: C. S. Lewis. Thursday, March 15, 2007. Monday, March 12, 2007. Lord Arthur Savile's Crime and Other Stories. Published: 1887 - 1889. Plenty of wit and hilarity but also, to my surprise, many stories in the fashion of a fable with a moral at the end. Also, quite a few make a stand for the poor and destitute, quite contrary to my impression of Wilde's work. Thursday, March 8, 2007. Bill, The Galactic Hero. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). ALOBIR: June 2007

http://alobir.blogspot.com/2007_06_01_archive.html

Monday, June 18, 2007. The novel started as a novella with the title. And Call Me Conrad. The novella shared the Hugo Award in 1966. And as much as I like Roger Zelazny, I find that fact astounding, even if there was no separate category for novella back then). This book is heavy on clever dialogue and big ideas, a little light on plot and character development, and very deep on mythology (much of which went over my head). And with this book, I begin rebuilding my Zelazny collection. Friday, June 15, 2007.

Tuesday, September 25, 2007. An illustrated history (lots of pretty pictures). A few technical tidbits and pointers to contemporary airship companies, most of which have since gone bankrupt. Sunday, September 23, 2007. Very dry account of the history of airships. At times, it goes into excruciating detail, especially in accounts of airships used by Germany in both World Wars. ALOBIR: Anansi Boys

http://alobir.blogspot.com/2007/10/anansi-boys.html

Tuesday, October 23, 2007. From published reports and reviews, I expected no less than perfection. Expectations were met. As I predicted, Gaiman is the kind of author who makes me want to give up writing because there is just no point, is there? My efforts will fall short and besides he's here on earth, writing these things which means that people need not seek out more entertaining, witty, hilarious works because such works don't exist. Best not to think about it and just continue on one's way.
