Insight from a Vietnam Fulbright: only in vietnam [entry #1]

Insight from a Vietnam Fulbright. I cannot help but think a curious event is this life of mine." - John James Audubon. Wednesday, June 20, 2012. Only in vietnam [entry #1]. Because I only have about a month left here (WOW), I am desperately trying to document all the quirky/ridiculous things in this country to share with people back home. There will (hopefully) be more similar entries to this one, so get excited. On my last trip to Hanoi, I was lucky enough to be there on Ho Chi Minh's birthday. WOOO!

Insight from a Vietnam Fulbright. I cannot help but think a curious event is this life of mine." - John James Audubon. Wednesday, June 20, 2012. Evolution of my experience [entry #2]: opening my eyes. Well, this is going to be a super dorky post. But anyways, here it goes. As I am sure is true with most travelers, I have a minor obsession with reading books about different countries, especially. In brief, the Hmong family is resettled in America after the war and have a very sick child. There is chro...

Insight from a Vietnam Fulbright: short-lived adventures in sapa

Insight from a Vietnam Fulbright. I cannot help but think a curious event is this life of mine." - John James Audubon. Wednesday, March 21, 2012. Short-lived adventures in sapa. Upon entering (please note I am the only foreigner- as it is HIGHLY suggested in the Lonely Planet not to take the hard seats), we notice that we are not the only ones who come prepared. You can tell these ladies (stolen from An's blog) have done this before:. When Rose goes down to 3rd class and has the time of her life. So if y...

Ashley's Fulbright in Vietnam: February 2013

http://ashley-in-vietnam.blogspot.com/2013_02_01_archive.html

Ashley's Fulbright in Vietnam. Saturday, February 16, 2013. Last week we went to Cambodia for 1) meetings and 2) to see some constructed wetlands that an organization is implementing in the Tonle Sap Lake. It was a really cool trip - besides getting food poisoning for the SECOND time in SE Asia. We spent most of our time in Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia. It was full of temples and expensive but delish restaurants. The whole city is decked out for the King Father Cremation. Statue in a tree :).

Ashley's Fulbright in Vietnam. Saturday, June 1, 2013. Why you always say yes to Bali. Because you just might miss this:. James and Brian went to Bali, Indonesia. I didn't go because I wanted to be responsible and work / do research. I missed this! Oh, and this:. Yep, James was attacked and bitten by a monkey. No, he doesn't have rabies. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Tạm biệt Việt Nam. Our Last Week in Can Tho. Things I havent done in almost a year. Last Hoorah in HCMC. Happy Fathers Day, Daddy!

Ashley's Fulbright in Vietnam: Exit Seminar on Con Dao Island

http://ashley-in-vietnam.blogspot.com/2013/06/exit-seminar-on-con-dao-island.html

Ashley's Fulbright in Vietnam. Wednesday, June 19, 2013. Exit Seminar on Con Dao Island. A couple of weeks ago we had our last Fulbright get together. Although I was hoping it would take place in Hue in the central region of Vietnam, Con Dao was a great alternative. I mean, who could complain about a conference on a very undeveloped tropical island? Wondering around the small town of Con Dao. Storm water drain (hopefully not sewage drain) draining into the sea. Hanging with Jennie and Raaka. That picture...

Ashley's Fulbright in Vietnam. Sunday, June 23, 2013. Things I haven't done in almost a year. Gone to Trader Joes (! Used an electric stove. Lived in a house or apartment. Gone to church :(. Used a smart phone. Seen my adviser and fellow labmates. Seen most of my family. Crossed the street without fear for my life. Used a key to open a door. Gone to the gym. Gone a day speaking English exclusively. Changed the litter box lol. Been allowed to flush toilet paper (required to put in trash can). Random Snaps...

Ashley's Fulbright in Vietnam. Sunday, June 30, 2013. Tạm biệt Việt Nam. Well, we are spending our last 2.5 days in Hanoi before flying home. As I write this, I have less than 24 hours before heading back. Hanoi has been fun - we finally went to Halong Bay today. Delicious, CRUNCHY banh xao on a side alley in Hanoi. I got glasses made ON THE SIDE OF THE STREET. Total cost - $28. It was SO COOL. Here, cutting the glasses with a pair of scissors. Goodbye coffee with Raaka! Corn milk. It was good! Happy Fat...

Ashley's Fulbright in Vietnam. Wednesday, June 26, 2013. Our Last Week in Can Tho. Playing various mind teaser games at a coffee shop with friends. Its so nice - everyone is present and relaxed. No iphones, no facebook, no email. Just friends sitting together. Love that. Going to miss that. At Cabin Coffee - quite possibly the best coffee shop in Can Tho. Flower from James :). Out playing pool with friends. Shrimp chips, okra, sticky rice, tofu and rice crispy covered tofu - all fried! Tạm biệt Việt Nam.

http://ashley-in-vietnam.blogspot.com/2013/06/goodbye-can-tho.html

Ashley's Fulbright in Vietnam. Sunday, June 30, 2013. Yes, saying goodbye is a very hard thing to do. On the afternoon we left the hotel for the last time, everyone gathered in the lobby to see us off - Thao, Ngoc, Di Ba, and Vinh. Kiki joined the goodbye party too :) It was a little emotional for all of us, and most of us cried. Saying goodbye to Kiki and Little Kitty / Buttons / Buster Brown. Thao and Ngoc seeing us off. Seeing the lobby for the last time. Our last meal - vegetarian as always. Travel t...

The Fulbright Program in Thailand is over-the-top amazing. They put on the 5th Annual ASEAN Fulbright Enrichment Seminar and the 2 day conference was so fancy and so great. We ended the conference with a dinner party at one of the old palaces in Bangkok. At the palace :) you cant wear your shoes inside. Some of) The Fulbright girls. Sam R...

To Iterate is Human. Musings on life and software engineering. July 6, 2014. Tumblr's nice in part because raw image posts don't really requre explanation. What that implies, though, is that the content is more about cultivating a particular feel than the informational content of most blogs. It's a step in that direction at least, though the distinction is never black-and-white. Even in a more informational context, visuals rarely go unappreciated. July 6, 2014. July 6, 2014.
