Around the world in 180 days | to learn is to follow
https://tolearnistofollow.wordpress.com/2015/06/28/around-the-world-in-180-days/comment-page-1
To learn is to follow. Some thoughts on education. Around the world in 180 days. June 28, 2015. June 28, 2015. Very curious, very curious, said Passepartout to himself, on returning to the steamer. I see that it is by no means useless to travel, if a man wants to see something new. Geography teachers are sometimes in such a hurry to move on to sexier process-based topics (coastal erosion, tectonics, migration etc.) that I think they overlook perhaps THE organising principle of their discipline place.

To learn is to follow. Some thoughts on education. Which knowledge should you teach from the Bible? March 30, 2015. In my last post I posed the question ‘Why should we teach about the Bible? I made the argument that:. You need to have a basic knowledge of the Bible to be genuinely fluent in the English language;. An understanding of Bible stories functions like keys that open doors in other subjects;. In this blog, I’m going to go into a bit more detail about which. Is needed to prevent the Matthew Effect.

Scientific inspiration – To Miss with Love

To Miss with Love. The resuscitated thoughts of Katharine Birbalsingh, Headmistress at Michaela. Here is my Head of Science holding up a new quote for my office. Richard Branson joins Muhammad Ali, Maya Angelou, Thomas Sowell and Mahatma Gandhi. He has large shoes to fill. Head of Science, picked up the poster to pose. Why? Because I asked her to. Where did it come from? Ghataura (at another school) mentioned the quote the other night because Doug Lemov. How do you know? 8221; she suddenly shouted. &...

To Miss with Love. The resuscitated thoughts of Katharine Birbalsingh, Headmistress at Michaela. If you work at Michaela, it would not be unusual to get an email like this from the Head:. Today is Thursday. Before the end of the week, you must say something to someone that you would not have otherwise said. Start with, ‘So Katharine said that I should say, so I’m saying it…’. The Headmistress at Michaela never gets any stars on the chart. And that’s because she is always candid. Hard to tak...That’...

To all the teachers out there… – To Miss with Love

To Miss with Love. The resuscitated thoughts of Katharine Birbalsingh, Headmistress at Michaela. To all the teachers out there…. I remember what it was like… feeling under siege, trying to do things differently in my own little classroom, rolling my eyes on inset days where power point, sugar paper and ‘fun’ ruled…. Here is one message I got today that brought tears to my own eyes. She’s happy again, Katharine. She’s smiling and inspired and feeling that she can regain some control. November 29, 2016.

To Miss with Love. The resuscitated thoughts of Katharine Birbalsingh, Headmistress at Michaela. I love working at Michaela. I love it because I work with the best people on the planet and we all work as a team. Today was one of those days. Everyone was in their own spaces, living their own lives, doing their own thing… But there we were, connecting in cyberspace. Why? Because we appeared in The Sunday Times today. It is such a great feeling when you’re walking to work on a Monday morning, with a s...

To Miss with Love. The resuscitated thoughts of Katharine Birbalsingh, Headmistress at Michaela. You are not Superman. The Headteacher of a high-performing school was once telling me about expectations he had of his staff and he mentioned how he wasn’t there for the staff, but of course he was there for the kids, as if this was the most obvious thing in the world. I paused at the time in my head, thinking, whuuuaaat? But nodded politely, wondering… is it just me? Saying you put staff first doesn’t ...

Santa is destroying our schools – To Miss with Love
https://tomisswithloveblog.wordpress.com/2016/12/04/santa-is-destroying-our-schools
To Miss with Love. The resuscitated thoughts of Katharine Birbalsingh, Headmistress at Michaela. Santa is destroying our schools. I’m not particularly religious, or indeed religious at all. But even I felt uncomfortable describing Santa as I might describe God. Doesn’t God mind, is what I kept thinking? Someone is playing at being Him! Isn’t what I’m saying blasphemous? I half expected a bolt of lightning to strike me down dead in the moment. But the lightning never came. Sometimes I’m naughty! Because w...

March 7, 2017. That we do not use PowerPoints at Michaela. Instead, Heads of Department co-ordinate the creation of all our resources, which we co-plan and share. There are so many benefits to this that it is hard to list them all, but here are a few that spring to mind:. Improve teachers’ subject knowledge:. Not only does our approach to planning support high quality teaching, but it ensures that every pupil receives the same standard of teaching in every lesson. Every moment spent on creating these res...
Making Science Stick | Cheng Reaction

December 4, 2016. In the new science GCSEs, there is a plethora of new knowledge that pupils need to remember – such as plant diseases caused by tobacco mosaic virus and rose black spot, and how monoclonal antibodies are used in pregnancy test kits. Furthermore, now that there are no more controlled assessments, pupils also need to remember and apply their knowledge of various practicals in an exam, too. So how do we make science stick at Michaela? Overlearning is key to pupils remembering for the long t...

« Notes from a learning life
Notes from a learning life. LMS vs PLE – Comparing apples and chickens? September 28, 2010 10:57 am. Before this course, I would never have thought to compare LMSs to PLEs – to me, that’s like comparing apples and chickens – they both may be food, and they compliment each other nicely when served on the same plate, but they are not really in the same category otherwise. In my mind, as I wrote in my earlier post. Opening thoughts on PLEs. September 14, 2010 10:06 pm. 3 Comments on Opening thoughts on PLEs.
