Copper Hollow: Tolomato Cemetery
http://copperhollow.blogspot.com/2014/11/tolomato-cemetery.html
A keeping of photography, poems, recipes, and travel. Friday, November 28, 2014. While in Jacksonville last month, I was fortunate enough to visit the Tolomato Cemetery. One of the things that makes this cemetery special is that it is small, just under an acre, but there are about 1,000 people buried here. Most of the graves are unmarked because back when the cemetery was founded the most common grave marker was made of wood. Not good long term for the hot and moist weather of Florida.

The Past and Present of Historic Tolomato Cemetery, St. Augustine, Florida. Wednesday, May 6, 2015. When we discuss the Minorcan arrival on our Tolomato Cemetery tours, most people’s first question is: Where…or even what…is Minorca? The name of the island is spelled “Minorca” by English speakers, and “Menorca” by Spanish and Catalan speakers. In the 18. Also in the 18. It was a fundraiser for the cemetery fence, and we did quite well, thanks to all of you who attended! The bookmarks included the O’...

Tolomato Cemetery Times: Looking for the Lost Chapel
http://tolomatocemetery.blogspot.com/2015/03/looking-for-lost-chapel.html
The Past and Present of Historic Tolomato Cemetery, St. Augustine, Florida. Tuesday, March 17, 2015. Looking for the Lost Chapel. Above are two maps of St Augustine, the first by the Spanish engineer Juan Elixio de la Puente in 1764, and the other by the British engineer Moncrief in 1765. Tolomato would be at the upper right, outside the city walls and near the Cubo Line that went along today’s Orange Street. But we have one question: Where exactly was the Franciscan chapel? Then last week, FPAN’s ...

The Past and Present of Historic Tolomato Cemetery, St. Augustine, Florida. Tuesday, April 7, 2015. Walking St Augustine…from Tolomato. As every blog reader knows, Tolomato Cemetery is located at the very start of the Historic District, at the north end of the city near the old City Gates (below) and the modern Visitors Information Center and Parking Garage. So it’s a perfect place for beginning your stroll through historic St Augustine, moving between past and present. But it just got even better! Tolom...

Tolomato Cemetery Times: Just where is Minorca, anyway?
http://tolomatocemetery.blogspot.com/2013/11/just-where-is-minorca-anyway.html
The Past and Present of Historic Tolomato Cemetery, St. Augustine, Florida. Monday, November 25, 2013. Just where is Minorca, anyway? This is a frequent question when we discuss the Minorcans at Tolomato Cemetery, and I’ve never been sure that people can really visualize it. We might have to attach a map of Spain to the Minorcan informational sign that we have at the cemetery. Minorca is one of the Balearic Islands ( Islas Baleares. The other side of the island is a little more moderate in climate, and f...

Tolomato Cemetery Times: July 2015

The Past and Present of Historic Tolomato Cemetery, St. Augustine, Florida. Monday, July 13, 2015. An Unexpected California Cemetery. I was also struck by a very touching symbol that appeared on numerous markers: two hands clasping, sometimes in front of a cloud or nimbus-like shape. This represented a farewell to earthly life and a welcome into eternity. So, in the unlikely event that I have to go to Santa Rosa again, I plan to check out the Santa Rosa Rural Cemetery.
