I have programmed for enjoyment, and from time to time for pay, since about the age of seven. Resources is a nice vague title; it lets me put all sorts of assorted things into one index:. Half a page on the philosophy of out-of-order execution. This is useful to explain why my benchmarks might be measuring interesting things. If you find this sort of low-level attitude to computing interesting, may I recommend the comp.arch. Newsgroup, where the greatest gurus of the field hang out.

Yes, I admit it now . I'm a science fiction fan. Well, now I've said it, and you'll assume that this means I have my own prosthetic ears (think! Honestly, would you really want to wear. Laying aside for a moment that they'd almost certainly not fit, just think of the hygiene problems), could repair the Starship Enterprise with my eyes shut, could name every (or indeed any) Blake's Seven episode, and am unable to participate in polite society without bursting out into Klingon poetry. None of these are true.

Four-descent on elliptic curves over Q. Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer also proposed an algorithm, known as 2-descent, for computing the generators explicitly, and it was substantially improved by my supervisor John Cremona. But sometimes it can run for arbitrary lengths of time without finding generators, and sometimes it gets the rank of the elliptic curve wrong by some multiple of two. When I wrote this page, I had 28,539 words of thesis written, and my implementation often worked reasonably well.
