Saturday, June 23, 2012. Return to Yankee Hat. Kangaroo sentry guards his harem. We returned to Yankee Hat with a few members of the U.S. Embassy staff on a crisp, but beautifully sunny winter's day. Off in the distance we could see several mountain tops with snow on them. The valley was full of kangaroos, and the sun warmed us as we hiked the six kilometer trail to the Aboriginal rock art site and returned. Kerry, Austin, Tomas, Mya, Nan, Ken. Time in Canberra Australia. Independence Day with Buzz Aldrin.

Sunday, April 29, 2012. Tasmania - Devils and All. We spent just over a week visiting several districts of Tasmania. Port Arthur UNESCO Site. First was Port Arthur, southeast of Hobart. Port Arthur was a British penal colony for repeat offenders between 1833 and 1877. After the prison was closed, tourism sprang up, which continues to this day. Port Arthur, and the other convict sites throughout Australia are now designated UNESCO World Heritage Sites for their historic value. Cradle Mountain National Park.

The theme of the Independence Day celebration at the U.S. Embassy in Canberra was Space Exploration. Our special guest was Buzz Aldrin, the second man to walk on the moon. Sunday, March 18, 2012. Lord Howe Island - The Last Paradise. Most of the island is virtually untouched forest with many of the plants and animals found nowhere else in the world. Almost half of the island's native plants are endemic. One of the best known is the Kentia Palm (Howea forsteriana) and makes a handsome houseplant. Lord Howe Island Stick Insect. White tern with lunch in beak for juvenile. In many respects it's hard to imagine another place like this. This may be "The Last Paradise".
