Tombos is an archaeological site located at the Third Cataract of the Nile River in modern-day Sudan. Tombs dating to the New Kingdom (mid-18th Dynasty) through the Napatan period are present, documenting the interaction and entanglement of Egyptian colonists and local Nubians during these major sociopolitical changes in the region. Location of Tombos Site. The current project at Tombos (2015-2018, supported by NSF grants BCS- 1359496. At a Kerma settlement at Hannek and nearby cemetery at Abu Fatima.

Working at Abu Fatima. February 27, 2016. NCAM inspector Reemah Abdelrheem, conservator Elizabeth Drolet, and UCSB PhD student Shayla Monroe removed many preserved organic materials in the Kerma period graves at Abu Fatima, include reed matting, hide, and leather. Shayla is particularly excited about the intact sheep included in one of the graves. Naturally mummified burials are also common at the site. Scribe-Reckoner of the Gold of Kush. February 24, 2016. January 31, 2016. Dr Stuart Tyson Smith and Elizabeth Drolet – Photo by Nadejda Reshetnikova. We just found an intact side niche. We reached the bottom in the Unit 35 shaft and it had a side niche that was still completely sealed, a modest Howard Carter moment! While the coffin was sadly termite eaten, it once had inlaid eyes and the burial is in situ. A nice array of pots was also found. Our conservator, Elizabeth Drolet, is helping to lift coffin pieces to check for traces of decoration.
