Sparking & Slipping. Sparking & Slipping is a virtuosic showpiece for violin, with an. Group of piano, harp & (mostly tuned) percussion. Its first and last sections are based around an obsessive, dance-like theme, while the central section sees the violin sculpt an extended, lyrical, melodic line. The piano, harp and percussion generally act together as one large resonating chamber for the violin with the exception of a significant piano solo in the work’s second half. Violin), Anne Denholm.

Seven Face Pictures is a setting of Caroline Bird’s ‘Facial’, a cycle of wonderfully evocative poetic vignettes, each based on a different feature. Each movement is strongly characterised, from the solemn prayer of ‘Eyes’ to the strong rhythmic profile of ‘Lips’ and the acceleration/deceleration vortex of ‘Nose’. The structure is symmetrical, with the instrumental texture thinning out towards the middle, leaving just the lone voice to sing the central movement. The work is dedicated to Caroline Bird.

Études for Solo Violin. Etudes 1 & 2. Glissandi upwards, downwards and in contrary motion evoke the sounds of jet engines, formula one cars and Jimi Hendrix’s performance of ‘Star Spangled Banner’. A cycle of quavers played pizzicato has its timings twisted and bent out of shape to become stuttering, rushed and erratic. Etudes 3 & 4. This étude is obsessive, strident and dissonant as loud, accented notes gradually become infected by chains of semiquavers. World premiere of Études 1 & 2. Foyer, London, UK.
