Northern Wind Aikido Judo Jodo: June 2012

Monday, June 25, 2012. Jigotai: Slaying the Beast! Occasionally, in judo, I get asked a question about a common problem. Essentially, a student it trying to throw their partner but can't get in. Maybe he feels like his partner is just too tall, or too big and strong. Fair enough. The same thing happens, actually, in aikido randori. Things are great when practicing a throw and we have a compliant uke, but when it comes to an uke who doesn't want to be thrown, he hit a wall. What happened? Still concerned ...

Northern Wind Aikido Judo Jodo: What does the "path" look like?
http://kitakazebudo.blogspot.com/2013/07/what-does-path-look-like.html
Tuesday, July 16, 2013. What does the "path" look like? If you study any modern Japanese martial art, you are no doubt familiar with the concept of "do." It's most often translated as "way" or "path," which makes for a very handy and versatile metaphor for the long, wonderful journey that is budo. If, then, the study of a martial art (or really anything) can be likened to a path, what does that path actually look. To me, it takes on different forms as you progress. There are clearly painted guidelines to...

Northern Wind Aikido Judo Jodo: April 2013
http://kitakazebudo.blogspot.com/2013_04_01_archive.html
Saturday, April 6, 2013. I was watching a high level jiu-jitsu match on YouTube recently, and I noticed something. Something I suppose I should have occurred to me a long time ago—after all, as a judo man, I grapple too—but I guess it took me seeing it from the outside to notice. And since judo matches rarely seem to end up on the ground (and when they do, it's not for very long), I've enjoyed observing watching seasoned grapplers do their thing. That's kind of the point of grappling, isn't it? That's wh...

Northern Wind Aikido Judo Jodo: Me, You, Us
http://kitakazebudo.blogspot.com/2014/07/me-you-us.html
Tuesday, July 29, 2014. Me, You, Us. Based on my own training over the years as well as observing the training of other students, it seems like there is sort of a three-step progression that occurs. What I Am Doing? It's also a time when we focus on what to do when we find ourselves in the midst of conflict, which is to say, defending ourselves, just staying alive. What HE/SHE Is Doing? Sure, up until this point, we may have been told. But now we have to understand why. For) when we do it ourselves.

Northern Wind Aikido Judo Jodo: Not the way I planned
http://kitakazebudo.blogspot.com/2014/01/not-way-i-planned.html
Wednesday, January 22, 2014. Not the way I planned. Howdy, folks. Been a loooooong time, I know. Imagine I wrote about the usual excuses, and let's just move on to what I've got on my mind, shall we? So last month, I had the opportunity to teach a few sessions of our kangeiko, or winter training session. I went. well, not like I'd hoped, truth be told. But I've run across a lot of other interest ideas from the broader aikido world that I thought would be fun to explore. They're ideas that demonstrate...

Northern Wind Aikido Judo Jodo: April 2012

Friday, April 20, 2012. Very nice series of demonstrations on centering from Doug Wedell Sensei—understanding where you're center is and where the center of the "system" is:. Posted by Sean Ashby. Thursday, April 19, 2012. The magic of switching your hips. Here's an interesting little variation you might try in your aikido practice, just for funzies. Take junana hon kata / randori no kata as well as the eight release movements and try doing them by starting at least with only a "hip switch.". Basically, ...

Thursday, July 31, 2014. Ukemi: The new cardio craze! Okay, ukemi isn't really a new cardio craze—but why not? I remember when I first started aikido years ago, just prior to my 20th birthday. I was a good 20 or 30 pounds overweight (I'd been that way since hitting puberty), and made no other lifestyle changes other than attending aikido classes 3 times a week. And I'm paying for it. My lifestyle in general has slipped and I'm probably in the worst shape of my life (and that's saying something). One prob...

Monday, January 21, 2013. What Martin Luther King Jr. Day means to me. To me—and this is simply my thoughts on the subject as of today—Martin Luther King Jr. Day is about so much more than just the relationship between white people and black people. It's even about more than just "racism.". The principles of the other politcal party are to blame for all our woes. God sanctions my religion, but considers yours sinful. Other people are poor because of their own bad decisions.". As O Sensei once said, ".

Northern Wind Aikido Judo Jodo: Aikido's greatest hits
http://kitakazebudo.blogspot.com/2014/06/aikidos-greatest-hits.html
Thursday, June 26, 2014. So the subject of atemi came up recently. Atemi, of course, refers to striking, punching, smacking, bitch-slapping, whatever. Ignoring for a moment the first five techniques of randori no kata / junana hon kata, we're talking about moments in other techniques (mostly in koryu kata) in which tori takes the opportunity to bop uke before moving on. But Ueshiba turned all that into an art of love and peace and harmony, right? So if you're going to keep strikes in your kata, beuno.
