Rotation is great but someday machines will do something else & it’ll be amazing. Yglesias has just published a great post about robots’ persistent failure to put us all out of work. You should go read it immediately. Forsaking any activities that contribute to GDP. On the other hand, I spent part of Sunday reading a great Wired story about sneaking paper maps out of post-Soviet Russia. This makes IT innovations a different beast from affirmed productivity boosters like HVAC and dishwashers. Those th...

badness | Tom Lee

http://tomlee.wtf/2014/12/31/badness

Vox has a nice piece about the nonsensical nature of “detox” diet regimens. When applied to food and health this drives me nuts. Responded to nutritional supplements and, perhaps, the ecclesiastical satisfaction to be had through near-hourly observance of my aunt’s prescribed chelation regimen. Some of this is probably due to the media’s translation of statistical accounts of epidemiological phenomena into stories that are causally simple enough to be understood by everyone. Something does some...But I t...

I think Ezra’s right about the commercial mechanics of comic book movies. Though I think this is partly due to origin stories being the only filmable comic book stories. But this is not what the new Star Wars movie is doing. Or I hope it’s not. Retelling a story is one thing, but quoting it is another. Isn’t taking the timbers of the original franchise and building a new house around them. It’s self-consciously constructing a scale model. December 22, 2015. We walked a few blocks past tiny, packed restau...

lyrics sites are still kind of dumb | Tom Lee

http://tomlee.wtf/2015/01/13/lyrics-sites-are-still-kind-of-dumb

Lyrics sites are still kind of dumb. Tim Lee is 100% right to situate Genius within a long and failed utopian tradition of annotating the web. Earlier today I complained. About one class of hopeless apps that often applied for grants from Sunlight. It eventually became clear to me that web annotation tools were another. That’s not to say that they weren’t cool–heck, we even built some ourselves. But it’s definitely a low-percentage play. January 13, 2015.

using others’ information | Tom Lee

http://tomlee.wtf/2014/12/21/using-others-information

Using others’ information. There are defensible reasons for disliking Malcolm Gladwell (too glib! And bad reasons for disliking him (too successful! But this is the reason that irritates me the most. Where do we draw the line? But it’s also hard to see the downside to what happened. Jack Sawyer has been dead for twenty years. Gladwell’s offense, if there is one, has been committed against our collective sensibilities, not against a person. I feel a bit sad whenever someone is drummed out of office for, s...

A More Detailed Tour of the Rust Compiler. Last week I gave a (poorly prepared) talk outlining how the Rust. Compiler works internally. Though the slides. Might be helpful and there was some interesting discussion after the talk, I thought a full post might do this topic more justice. Note that as of writing this the current release of Rust is 0.10. Some of what I cover in this article may well change by the time you get around to reading this. Reads raw program source code and emits a stream of. Occurs,...
