http://mindyfriddle.blogspot.com/2010_07_01_archive.html
Thursday, July 29, 2010. Hub City This Weekend: It's About Perspective. I'm going to be at the Hub City Writing Conference. This weekend in Spartanburg, SC. I'm leading a fiction workshop, and my focus is narrative point of view in fiction. [Info on the conference registration follows, but my class is full. I think all the fiction classes are full! The essential question for point of view: Who is telling the story? This kind of narrator:. 8220; . .many contemporary narratives are written in first...Dista...

Novel Thoughts: Writing: A Loooooooong Apprenticeship
http://mindyfriddle.blogspot.com/2011/02/writing-loooooooong-apprenticeship.html
Monday, February 14, 2011. Writing: A Loooooooong Apprenticeship. In the traditional meaning: "apprenticeship" became prominent in medieval Europe with the emergence of the craft guilds. The standard apprenticeship lasted seven years, from age 14 to 21, for example. [Back then you died at 40, so there wasn't time for career burnout.]. I like to use the word apprenticeship. To describe writing, because unless one is enormously freakishly talented at a disgustingly young age, [see The New Yorker's. St Mart...

Novel Thoughts: Don't Miss "Getting Closer"
http://mindyfriddle.blogspot.com/2011/01/dont-miss-getting-closer.html
Monday, January 3, 2011. Don't Miss "Getting Closer". In this issue of The New Yorker: a gorgeous story, " Getting Closer. I admire Millhauser's fiction.he is a fabulist and a minaturist- totally unique voice- nobody writes like him. This story is rather short, but every sentence glitters with hard beauty like a jewel. And such suspense! You know something is going to happen, something important. The Zen Buddhist term for a flash of sudden awareness- that's what this character experiences. Dont Miss Gett...

Novel Thoughts: Stop Me if You've Heard This
http://mindyfriddle.blogspot.com/2011/01/stop-me-if-youve-heard-this.html
Monday, January 10, 2011. Stop Me if You've Heard This. Snow really is the great equalizer. Everybody's lawn the same, everybody's car. The snow gobbles up the differences. And it is rare here, rare enough that everything is closed, except a few gas stations. It is also book weather.forget beach reading, snow reading. Is the real heavy lifting. I'll leave with some favorite snow quotes:. It is winter here. Look how white everything is, how quiet, how snowed-in. - Sylvia Plath. Posted by Mindy Friddle.

Thursday, February 3, 2011. February 18th Book Inn Luncheon. I love events in January and February because there are- rarely- any temptations to go outside and bask in the sun or sweat at weed pulling. The Garden Angel, unflappable. In the Columbia, SC area, so if you're in central South Carolina or want to take a drive, I'd probably* love to see you. Here are the where's and when's:. St Martin's...

Kim Foster: August 2008
http://kimfosterga.blogspot.com/2008_08_01_archive.html
Wednesday, August 6, 2008. For those who don't know, I left town on July 15th to attend the Sewanee Writers' Conference in Sewanee, TN. ( www.sewaneewriters.org. The trip was a big deal to me, and I figured I'd be blogging all about it by now, but other matters have eclipsed the conference. Just before I left for TN, Mama had come down with shingles. ( www.shinglesinfo.com. Problematic medicine for the shingles? Is the nursing home now keeping her doped up so she'll be less trouble to them? I am a writer...

Kim Foster: April 2009
http://kimfosterga.blogspot.com/2009_04_01_archive.html
Tuesday, April 28, 2009. When Your Wife Doesn't Feel Well. I always think that if a man can't figure out how a woman wants to be treated, just look at how she treats her kids. However we mothers treat our children (if we're mentally normal and all) is bound to be our idea of what pure love is. How do we greet them? How do we talk to them? Feed them. Whatever. With that in mind, let me just say that when I am sick I would like the following:. Take care of me. When I'm just lightly-to-moderately sick, and ...

Kim Foster: Ruby Slippers
http://kimfosterga.blogspot.com/2009/10/ruby-slippers.html
Monday, October 5, 2009. When my daughter Bliss was little, Target used to sell sparkly jewel-encrusted red shoes that reminded me of the ruby slippers from The Wizard of Oz. Every time I went in the store I would look at them and think how thrilled she would be if I bought her some. But then I'd think, Don't be frivolous. That's ten dollars, or whatever, that could be spent on something more practical. A hundred times I looked at them, a hundred times I never bought them. The Margaret Mitchell House.

Kim Foster: December 2008
http://kimfosterga.blogspot.com/2008_12_01_archive.html
Tuesday, December 2, 2008. In the Restroom of The Pink Pony. Here is what it's like in the ladies' room of The Pink Pony, which is a strip club. Yes, with female strippers. Don't worry how I know these things; just read. To have girly sex? Hmm Signs on the inside of the stall door instruct the strippers as to what drinks to order if a customer offers them one (high-priced champagne cocktails). You make a mental note to share this tidbit with your husband. Then you sashay back to your table where ...View ...
