DeCarlo Woodworks: September 2011

Tuesday, September 6, 2011. Half Round Bed Crown. Hi, I'm back! This time I'm going to step you through a half round bed crown. This crown was a custom order, so I had to make a jig to cut the top and bottom. Since it will be covered with fabric, I will not have to paint it.wahoo! The view of the base as it sits in the miter gauge slot. Its a very snug fit, you don't want the jig to move. Its very important to use a brad point drill bit on a drill press to make the hole for the pivot point. You want ...

DeCarlo Woodworks: March 2011
http://decarlowoodworks.blogspot.com/2011_03_01_archive.html
Wednesday, March 9, 2011. Hi, this is a real short post but I thought you might like to see how easy it is to make an otherwise useless scrap piece of wood into a very usable piece. This scrap piece of 1/2 inch plywood will be our star today. As you see there are no square edges and no really straight edges either, a woodworkers nightmare! The trick is to use a table saw sled, since the sled is fixed at 90 degrees to the blade, we get right angles every time. Repeat the last step. Posted by Mike DeCarlo.

DeCarlo Woodworks: December 2010
http://decarlowoodworks.blogspot.com/2010_12_01_archive.html
Thursday, December 30, 2010. Hi, I hope you're enjoying the holidays! And I'm sure there will be plenty of left overs for the days ahead. And once the plastic containers are emptied and cleaned, you'll need a place to store them! Well you're in luck, I'm going to show you how to make a simple lid organizer. Lids, lids, lids everywhere! Happens every time I open the cabinet door to get one. (I really only wanted one! Lets cut some wood. Here are the blanks for the dividers and sides. Now, I have a good si...

DeCarlo Woodworks: November 2010
http://decarlowoodworks.blogspot.com/2010_11_01_archive.html
Monday, November 29, 2010. Hi again, if you missed my last post Childs Bookcase w/Whismical Trim. Be sure to check it out! You won't be sorry :). Ok, this time around we're going to make a curved bed crown. The same frame is used for all of the crowns of this type. I usually make the frames ahead of time, this way all I need to do is cut and apply the face. I have many designs but this time I'm making a new design, so you get to see how I go about making the design and the templates. I emphasize this ste...

DeCarlo Woodworks: April 2011
http://decarlowoodworks.blogspot.com/2011_04_01_archive.html
Friday, April 1, 2011. Hi, I'm back with another refinishing project. This time I refinished a mahogany coffee table top I designed and built 7 or 8 years ago. I originally finished it with Tried and True Varnish Oil. It looked great for a while but then it began to loose its luster. I guess from the abuse, I mean use, it endured through the years. After a good sanding with 100 grit sandpaper, using my Festool Rotex set on the aggressive mode, it looks like this. (Notice there's no dust? Now for the next...

DeCarlo Woodworks: The last masking tape you'll ever use...
http://decarlowoodworks.blogspot.com/2011/12/last-masking-tape-youll-ever-use.html
Wednesday, December 14, 2011. The last masking tape you'll ever use. I was recently commissioned to paint black and white strips on one of my crowns. I know, the paint will bleed and it will look horrible, best to just pass on the sale. Well, I figured nothing ventured nothing gained, so I agreed to paint the crown. I heard about Frog Tape a few years ago while watching one of the DIY channels that covered the New Tool convention in Vegas. (Yes, tape is a tool! Haven't you heard of duct tape?

DeCarlo Woodworks: February 2011
http://decarlowoodworks.blogspot.com/2011_02_01_archive.html
Thursday, February 24, 2011. Hi, today I am going to refinish a mahogany bowl and lid I turned many years ago. First, I sanded it down to the bare wood. no finish left over from last time. I applied a thin coat of boiled linseed oil and let it dry over night. In the flash photo below it looks done but we're just getting started! After an hour or when the shellac is completely dry, I sanded again with 400 grit paper and then applied another coat of shellac. After an hour or when the shellac is completely ...

DeCarlo Woodworks: Wooden Hand Planes
http://decarlowoodworks.blogspot.com/2014/05/wooden-hand-planes.html
Friday, May 30, 2014. Recently, I've decide to give wooden molding planes a try and make my own set of hollows and rounds. After watching two DVDs on the subject, I was able to have pretty good success! As you can see in the pics below, I started with the #18 hollow and round planes. I will continue on down to the #2's as time permits. These are time consuming at first to make but with the learning curve they begin to get done faster. They look pretty good for a first attempt!
