A Little About Myself. Russian Style →. August 8, 2011. Me, Vitaly, Masha, Max. Masha and I left Friday evening for Arzarmas, the small town in which her parents live. From there, it was cheaper to catch a train to Moscow, so naturally we took the cheaper route. View of the city, although only a small portion. I have already mentioned the historic importance of Moscow (the region). In my previous post about Kazan, I mentioned that the prince of Moscow was the first to defeat the Mongol Tatars. A Little About Myself. No Heaven, and no Hell. Kazan Pictures →. Post Kazan and Moscow. July 26, 2011. In the 18th and 19th centuries these two streets were inhabited by merchants, industrialists and artisans. The streets bare the name of their Churchs which tower over their former mansions and estates. Church of the Profit Elija. Built in 1506. Restored in 1655, and again around 1990. Coupla's of that Church. Another mansion owned by a wealthy merchant, largly unrestored. Left wing of that house. This F...

A Little About Myself. July 31, 2011. Moscow, Nizhny and Tatarstan. I will begin this blog with a brief history of Kazan, detailing about as much as I know about this old, yet extremely sophisticated city. I took plenty of pictures to complement my commentary, and I hope you all enjoy this beautiful, historic city as much as I did. Here goes:. Finally, at the battle of Kulikovo in 1380, Dmitri, a powerful Russian prince from the small principality of Moscow managed to defeat the Mongolians. This batt...

Inside a Kremlin tower. Reminded me of the type of carriage a Khan would have used. Fountain on the main tourist street. Church behind a giant, I think Cathedral. Watching her wash herself. Statue for Myllanur Vachtob, a communist leader of the Tartar Republic during the 60s. Sort of like State Police. This entry w...

A Little About Myself. I’m Just a Rider on a Rail…. No Heaven, and no Hell. →. July 10, 2011. I am a little late on this post, I completely forgot that yesterday was Saturday. I believe it is Prince Vasili. Repitition is the mother of learning. Me enjoying the Volga. Stairs, part of the journey home. A nice little view. Address neve...

A Little About Myself. Newer posts →. I’m Just a Rider on a Rail…. July 2, 2011. It’s amazing how hospitable complete strangers can be. One of the highlights of the week was getting a new professor. The new professor can speak English, but I asked her to keep it strictly Russian. Nonetheless, I like her better because she knows more literature and history. This works because we can look at and translate Pushkin and Blok poems instead of singing Soviet anthems. Hopefully this works out well. Masha made me...

A Little About Myself. Post Kazan and Moscow →. No Heaven, and no Hell. July 16, 2011. Matthew and I thought of going to Kazan, a largely Muslim oblast that neighbors Nizhny. My friend Ildar lives not far from Kazan, and if I can scrape up the money to go we will be heading there. It would be a majestic experience for me Kazan was the territory that Ivan the Terrible first campaigned against and took; the history is unequivocal. Me next to the Lenin monument to show how large it is. Why did you choose it?
