View from the Hill. Monday, August 10, 2015. When I was a boy there was this swamp up the street from our house,. Just over the edge of town, muddy and shallow, devoid of fish,. A breeding ground for mocassins and frogs and turtles. That could take off a finger with one powerful snap,. A paradise for mosquitoes and vermin beyond reach of the DDT sprayer. That swept over the town like a thick pall of fog. At night, they would rise and drift on a soft west wind. To blanket and terrorize all in their path.

View from the Hill. Sunday, August 9, 2015. It's a sleepy afternoon in the Quarter, linger over a plate of crawfish at Johnny Po' Boys. A steady rain falls, loud thunderclaps echoing off. The moss covered walls. That's about as good as it gets. Mosey back to our pied-a-terre a few doors down from Emeril's place, gradually immerse ourselves in the slower rhythm of the Big Easy. The lady in the spice shop directs Janet to the laundry room, a small alcove off the courtyard. That's ALMOST as good as it gets.
