Under 3 Roofs: How do we honor children's hard work?
http://underthreeroofs.blogspot.com/2013/07/how-do-we-honor-childrens-hard-work.html
Monday, July 1, 2013. How do we honor children's hard work? We might honor it in the moment by observing it, commenting on it, and supporting it. When I see a child has spent time with an idea or a creation - thought about it, struggled with it, maybe had to make changes -. Rethink some of its aspects - I want them to know that I was a witness to the process. We might honor it by offering further provocation. Mother, art educator, and blogger, Rachelle Doorley. Max: You just grab it. Shawna (Maddy's mom)...

Thursday, November 20, 2014. Open Studio Snapshots - Exploring Paper. Last month, I invited families to join their children here for our first Open Studio. Of the year. Seeing as paper was the first material. That children used in the Studio, it only seemed fitting that this be the subject of this initial Open Studio. Here are some photos of an evening spent exploring this remarkable material (with some tape thrown in). Harlan and his mom, Sky, worked with tape and paper. Harlan created a three-dimen...

Explore Inspire EC: Leaving Room For Wonder
http://exploreinspireec.blogspot.com/2015/08/leaving-room-for-wonder.html
Snapshots from my classroom and reflections on my journey as a teacher. Sunday, August 9, 2015. Leaving Room For Wonder. Walking through the park one morning, I noticed a few bricks red bricks peeking up through the grass. Taking a closer look, I noticed a line of bricks. Then, further on, I saw there were actually two rows of red bricks, buried or covered by grass in some places, a brick or two missing in others, stretching through the park. What were they once a part of? After a while I noticed several...

http://exploreinspireec.blogspot.com/2015/08/pegboards-pipe-cleaners-and-emergent.html
Snapshots from my classroom and reflections on my journey as a teacher. Sunday, August 2, 2015. Pegboards, Pipe Cleaners, and Emergent Curriculum. Last week I posted a photo of an activity involving pipe cleaners and pegboards. Someone asked me how I came up with the idea to set up those materials in that way. The initial inspiration came from observing the children’s activities and interests. My job was to provide the materials for them to put their ideas into action. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Snapshots from my classroom and reflections on my journey as a teacher. Friday, June 26, 2015. Taking Sensory Play to the Next Level. I’ve always wondered why older preschoolers tend to ignore the sensory table. Is sand and water play boring? Is it just that there are more exciting things to do in the classroom? Toddlers and young 2’s and 3’s can’t seem to get enough of sand and water play, scooping and pouring it. In and out of containers, watching it flow, mastering the concepts of empty and full.

Explore Inspire EC: Emotional Risk, Bruised Feelings, Resilient Kids
http://exploreinspireec.blogspot.com/2015/07/emotional-risk-bruised-feelings.html
Snapshots from my classroom and reflections on my journey as a teacher. Tuesday, July 7, 2015. Emotional Risk, Bruised Feelings, Resilient Kids. But what about play that involves emotional risk? We’ve confused risk with danger. In The Blessing of a Skinned Knee. In our drive to keep children from suffering, we’ve forgotten that it’s also our responsibility to teach them how to recover. It’s our responsibility to help them learn that a bruise isn’t the same thing as a puncture. Subscribe to this blog.

http://exploreinspireec.blogspot.com/2015_07_01_archive.html
Snapshots from my classroom and reflections on my journey as a teacher. Thursday, July 23, 2015. What Can I Do With This? It’s that time of year again, when teachers spend hours paging through catalogs and websites, scouring stores, and brainstorming ideas for what we want in our classrooms this year. There’s something exciting about a new school year filled with new materials, and a classroom prepared and ready for the next set of children to walk through the door. Our goal is to create an environment t...
