White Sands National Monument

During making plans for my January 2014 trip South for riding bicycles, I stopped in Las Cruces, NM to visit a Nam vet friend and his wife. Decided to visit White Sands, being in the area. The sand is actually gypsum. The wind blows the gypsum into dunes. The white sands are blinding bright on sunny days. The gypsum drifts like snow, necessitating plowing the park road. There is a marked trail on the loop section of the road.

The art of photography is capturing images that most people do not see. The 2016 Bicycle Trails calendar is available. Contact me for information. These days, most of my photograpy is connected to my cycling. I try to always have a point and shoot digital camera in a pocket of my cycling jersey. Riding a bicycle has helped my photography. I see so much more on a bicycle than I do in a car and I have the time to shoot some photos. There are photos and photo files available for sale in the Gallery.

Traveling from Iowa to Las Cruces, NM, it was not much out of the way to check out Carlsbad Caverns National Park. Those that know me, know that detours to visit National Parks, Monuments, and Historic sites is normal action. I was very impressed with Carlsbad Caverns. Not far from the elevators to the Big Room of the cavern. It is massive! Don't miss the one-way gravel road Walnut Canyon Desert Drive. The drive gives you a flavor for the surrounding countryside.

It's a great day to ride a bicycle! I was not happy with the structure of the bicycling pages on my web site. Also, I wanted to expand the cycling section. Bicycling has become my passion. First, what got me to this stage? On completion of cardiac rehab, I was looking to continue my exercising. Now, the treadmill got me in better shape, but using that did not do things for me.
