Community spirit at work…. The site of St. James Church. Tong has been a place of Christian worship for close on a thousand years. The church as it stands was re-built in 1727 by a team of stone masons that included John Nelson. Nelson was later to experience a dramatic conversion through the preaching of John Wesley in London,and became a significant Methodist leader and preacher. As you approach the village from the A650 Wakefield Road it is on the left hand side after passing Tong Holiday Inn Hotel on the right, and Tong Hall on the left. The church dates back to Saxon times, although the present church building is more or less as it was when it was rebuilt in 1727.
