Allotment Garden

An amateur’s diary of organic allotment growing. Saturday, 4 July 2015. Early July allotment photographs. Having just successfully finished Geoff Lawton's permaculture course, I decided to try out Geoff's method of making compost. Now I am the kind of grower that usually piles allotment organic waste in a big pile, usually contained within a structure made of pallets, and leaves it to its own devices for at least a year. Compost heaps at the old allotment. Drying the perennial weeds. My seven compost bins.

Allotment Garden: Carrot root fly (Psila rosae)

http://tonythegardener.blogspot.com/p/carrot-root-fly.html

An amateur’s diary of organic allotment growing. Carrot root fly (Psila rosae). Carrot root fly Psila rosae. Is one of the most irritating pests on the allotment. Carrots under the enviromesh. I am also going to experiment with cloches next year. I don't think that carrots like the heat generated by cloches though so it may not be as successful as I would like. As I thought, cloches were not such a good idea because they were too warm for the carrots and also they did not produce the complete seal that e...

An amateur’s diary of organic allotment growing. Tuesday, 17 February 2015. Permaculture Design Course with Geoff Lawton. So, I have started the online permaculture design course with the greening of the desert man Geoff Lawton. What do I think of it? Some of the concepts such as; 'always make the problem the solution' and 'gardening can solve all problems' I like! Even though; I still cannot find a solution for Equisetum arvensis. To quote the Loess Plateau in China? Also, I was pleased to see that Geof...

Allotment Garden: Slugs and Snails

http://tonythegardener.blogspot.com/p/slugs-and-snails.html

An amateur’s diary of organic allotment growing. It is not so much a too many slugs problem; it is really a too few ducks problem. I used Nemaslug nematode ( Phasmarhabditis hermaphrodita. I don't think so. A tidy allotment or garden is also a good deterrent. If there is no habitat for the molluscs to live in then there will be many fewer of them. If you are going for the hand collection method, it is easier if you use traps like upturned flower pots, upturned orange or grapefruit skins or planks of wood...

Allotment Garden: Is compost an organic fertiliser?

http://tonythegardener.blogspot.com/p/is-compost-organic-fertiliser-confusion.html

An amateur’s diary of organic allotment growing. Is compost an organic fertiliser? Confusion on confusion which always happens when scientific terms and every day terms are mixed up. Even in science, the term organic means different things. In biology it means anything that is or has been alive and is related to the term organism. In chemistry it means chemicals that contain carbon. Organic chemistry is the study of carbon. What it means in everyday language is completely obscure. When talking about grow...

Allotment Garden: The way I get rid of couch grass (Elymus repens)

http://tonythegardener.blogspot.com/p/the-way-i-get-rid-of-couch-grass-elymus.html

An amateur’s diary of organic allotment growing. The way I get rid of couch grass (Elymus repens). Sorry, there is no quick way of getting rid of couch grass. It is a bit of a bind weeding it out but just remember it is not as difficult as trying to get rid of bindweed or mares tail. It can be a little disheartening if, after spending quite a while digging over an allotment, couch grass regenerates and makes it look very untidy. And mare's tail Eqisetum arvensis. Various rhizomous weeds drying before.

Gibney Garden Jams: Cooking from scratch: a real curry

http://gibneysgardengrowing.blogspot.com/2012/05/cooking-from-scratch-real-curry.html

Thursday, 10 May 2012. Cooking from scratch: a real curry. I got thinking about the way every generation says things were better in their day. I came to the conclusion that of course it was not better, just different! There are so many great advances in the last 20 years, kitchen appliances, computers, power tools and so many more. Fantastic the world has got better in every way, or has it? 4 green cardamom pods, seeds removed. 4 whole cloves crushed. 4 allspice berries crushed. 2 tbsp. Tomato purée.

My first foray into blogdom. Welcome to my allotment, this little patch of mud somewhere in London. Tuesday, September 27, 2011. Wallis thinks he is the big man (he weighs just 14 ounces full grown) and he struts like he owns the world. We called him Wallis because when those beautiful feathers came in they reminded me of a Tiffany lamp and so (hoping for a hen) he was named after 30's icon Wallis Simpson. Ah well, my mum reckons Simpson was tarty strumpet anyway! Links to this post. The beauty of piccal...

My first foray into blogdom. Welcome to my allotment, this little patch of mud somewhere in London. Wednesday, October 01, 2014. I harvested the last of the cucumbers and used two different recipes to make sweet pickles and sour dill pickles. Cucumber glut to be processed. The first recipe was this one for sweet dill pickles. I do these as slices and they are very popular with Little Flower who will pop a jar and eat the whole lot while doing her homework.better than sweets I s'pose! 250 g sliced onions.

My first foray into blogdom. Welcome to my allotment, this little patch of mud somewhere in London. Friday, May 08, 2015. HOME MADE SEED TAPES. I've made some seed tapes. An internet friend from a forum I visit has had great success growing parsnips this way. So I'm copying him! Home made DIY seedtapes. I had started off my parsnip seeds on wet tissue paper, planting only the seeds that germinated, in the hope of getting a full row (for once in my life). Can it really be that easy? The top half of a milk...

Thursday, June 13, 2013. It Isn't What It Isn't! I had the opportunity to have a 1 on 1 tryst with Coach Gee Abanilla on 2 occasions last year. He is one of the nicest, most polite, soft spoken and truly lasalite gentleman that I have met. Last year was a difficult year to start as head coach, yet he took on the challenge and his team overachieved. And how do we reward him for that? With a knee-jerk reaction, spitting on his efforts, and giving him a big F-U out the door. This is the lasal way. Many will...
