Paracynic: June 2008

You've all seen them. Shirt unbuttoned, t-shirt stretched out with the lapel mic, mustard stains, boots [un-tied, unzipped, un-laced], unshaven, unbathed.the list goes on. Sometimes you'll see them in line at the Dunkin' Donuts. Sometimes at the ED charge desk. Sometimes sitting on the diamond plate of their [emergency response vehicle], smoking a cigarette. Looking like dogshit. But that's not the case. If you have time to light a cigarette, you have time to tuck your shirt in. You don't HAVE to shine y...

They don’t make ‘em like they used to. at Pre-Hospital Blog

EMS can be better. They don’t make ‘em like they used to. Whenever I am talking to non-EMS folk about what it is I do for a living, the conversation inevitably turns to a question like “you must see some pretty bad car wrecks.” And my response is usually to say “You’d be surprised. Cars are really safe nowadays.” People seem to walk away from crashes that would have killed everyone and probably some bystanders 20 years ago. I’ll take the 2009 any day. Check out the video on the site. Did you like this?

STEMI | On the "Bus"
https://nyemt.wordpress.com/2009/12/23/stemi
December 23, 2009. I almost always enjoy working with medics, and this past Sunday was no exception. I’ve been entertaining the idea of going to paramedic school prior to medical school, and with that thought in mind I have been studying a bit of ECG interpretation along with the ALS protocols for my city. 8221; (ignore my terrible Russian spelling, this is roughly how it sounds though). which translates to “chest pain? 8220;Da. Da” … “yes, yes”. I have the 3-lead by now, and it shows some ST elevations ...

Intox | On the "Bus"

August 6, 2010. As anyone working in a big city in paramedicine knows, we often get sent to “unconscious” patients that end up being a drunk that decided to catch some Z’s in the middle of the street. We had one such call today, at 4pm in the afternoon. We picked up and onto our stretcher and into the truck. After enjoying a nice sternal rub he woke up. Of course he denied drinking, and then the following exchange:. Intox: “why am I here? Me: “you were sleeping in the street”. Leave a Reply Cancel reply.

July 17, 2010. The middle-aged Hispanic male that presented to the ER today after cutting his hand open with a circular saw unnecessarily reminded me that power tools are indeed sharp, and probably should not be used when your hand is in the line of fire. Yes, you may have your morphine. Ow. Leave a Reply Cancel reply. Enter your comment here. Fill in your details below or click an icon to log in:. Address never made public). Sick | On the "Bus"
https://nyemt.wordpress.com/2010/08/05/sick
August 5, 2010. Within EMS, when we are dispatched to a “sick job”, it’s a BLS emergency (meaning EMT’s are sent, not paramedics) because it’s assumed to be a less serious patient. But, in medicine, if a doctor asks a colleague to come see a “sick” patient, it means he/she believes that person is seriously ill. It’s the EMS equivalent of a “legit” job.
