Consulting Toolsmiths - Matt Doar. Thursday, September 25, 2014. Why spaces in filenames are dangerous. There seem to be more files with spaces in their names on Windows machines than in Unix. Both Windows and Linux have allowed spaces in their names for decades now, so why the difference? I think part of the answer is that more people work at the command line in Unix than Windows. And spaces in filenames make it easier to lose files on Unix. Lose, as in, gone forever. Step by Simple Step. Rw-r- r- 1 mdo...

Consulting Toolsmiths - Matt Doar: What if Christmas became a world-changing event again?

http://toolsmiths.blogspot.com/2010/11/what-if-christmas-became-world-changing.html

Consulting Toolsmiths - Matt Doar. Monday, November 29, 2010. What if Christmas became a world-changing event again? I came across the Advent Conspiracy. Today and I like it. And its ideas can be applied to any special day that has become poisoned by profit. What was once a time to celebrate the birth of a savior has somehow turned into a season of stress, traffic jams, and shopping lists. What if Christmas became a world-changing event again? Consulting Toolsmiths - Matt Doar: On Anonymous Bugs

http://toolsmiths.blogspot.com/2011/03/on-anonymous-bugs.html

Consulting Toolsmiths - Matt Doar. Wednesday, March 9, 2011. Anonymity is a wonderful thing for many serious matters in this world. But posting unexceptional comments anonymously on a bug (or webpage) because you just can't be bothered to fill in your name is not wonderful. It just makes the anonymous author appear to lazy to register. And then the person reading the comment thinks less of the comment because it was made anonymously. It's not just what you say, it's how you say it. Posted by Matt Doar.

Consulting Toolsmiths - Matt Doar: Action, Expectation, Observation

http://toolsmiths.blogspot.com/2010/09/action-expectation-observation.html

Consulting Toolsmiths - Matt Doar. Wednesday, September 1, 2010. Action, Expectation, Observation. I remember writing some parts of Practical Development Environments. Vividly, despite the sleep deprivation that writing a book and having a new child will produce. One such section summarizes what goes into a good bug report:. The three key points to bear in mind when creating a bug report should be:. How to reproduce the bug, as precisely as possible, and how often this will make the bug appear.

Consulting Toolsmiths - Matt Doar: Curiosity and Control

http://toolsmiths.blogspot.com/2011/10/curiosity-and-control.html

Consulting Toolsmiths - Matt Doar. Friday, October 7, 2011. I've also been thinking about why some people write code and some don't. I think there is indeed the creative aspect, and that's often expressed in other kinds of creative efforts. But there's also the aspect of curiosity about the software that we use. Like to know how things work, including their software. It seems to me that this is connected to a desire to control one's environment. So perhaps part of coding is about being control?

Consulting Toolsmiths - Matt Doar: Word for the day: Disintermediation

http://toolsmiths.blogspot.com/2010/11/word-for-day-disintermediation.html

Consulting Toolsmiths - Matt Doar. Tuesday, November 9, 2010. Word for the day: Disintermediation. The removal of intermediaries in a supply chain: "cutting out the middleman". I wonder if I can get my 14-year old to use it correctly in class. I reckon it would make her English teacher's day. Posted by Matt Doar. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). A Grimm's Reality: April 2012

http://agrimmsreality.blogspot.com/2012_04_01_archive.html

Thursday, April 26, 2012. Greenhopper, Jira, and REST. One of the somewhat frustrating problems I'm dealing with in Greenhopper is that I want the ability to treat a linked issue like a subtask, but without all the restrictions of a subtask. Subtasks have at least three limitations that get in my way:. They must be in the same project as their parent. They must have the same permissions (issue-level security) as their parent. The code could use some error checking, but this is a pretty simple starting po...

A Grimm's Reality: Resurrecting Jiranemo

http://agrimmsreality.blogspot.com/2012/04/resurrecting-jiranemo.html

Wednesday, April 25, 2012. About six years ago, David Christian. CLI called jiranemo (his original blog post. Is, somewhat surprisingly, still around on the rPath website). After he left rPath, I spent some time updating the code for Jira 4 and adding some minor features, but it's been mostly stagnant for about two years. In the meantime, Jira 5 has been released, and the core dependency of jiranemo, SOAPpy, has been declared dead. This month, Eucalyptus. Again I've now converted it from SOAPpy to suds.
