Why use a figure? Because its easier. And fun! From a kid perspective. We wanted to both facilitate high-fidelity story creation and teach the concept of keyframe animation (which is initially very foreign). Add to that learning a professional-level animation program and you will have a confused and frustrated student - who just wants to make animations! From an interaction design perspective.

Why use a figure? Process of figure creation. 1st iteration: foamcore, tubing, sculpey, remnants of artists doll, bend sensors, potentiometers, arduino boards, Flash. 2nd iteration: project enclosure box, bend sensors, potentiometers, remnants of artists doll, apoxy, copper tubing, wiimote, small plush toy dog.
