Saturday, October 25, 2008. Sanibel Island has 6,400 acres of land (two thirds of the island) that is protected from development as the J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge. Wildlife everywhere on Sanibel has special status; the entire island is a bird sanctuary. The Pileated Woodpecker obviously feels at home here, and they are commonly seen around the island. Friday, February 27, 2009. Lunch On the Coast of Sanibel Island. These were immature brown pelicans fishing for their lunch. As soon as they spotted a fish, and did their awkward dive, the sea gulls flew all around them trying to steal lunch for themselves. They were putting on quite a show, as were the Royal Terns with their diving. These pictures make me homesick a little. I was born and raised in Florida and I have fond memories of the beach. :). I thought it was a Florida Tree Frog until I realized how large it really was, around 4". I had read that any tree frog over 2.5" was an Invasive Cuban Tree Frog.
