the icebox door: "User" focused? Perhaps a Bad Idea.
http://iceboxdoor.blogspot.com/2015/06/user-focused-perhaps-bad-idea.html
Friday, June 19, 2015. Perhaps a Bad Idea. If we understand that meaning will be drawn from everything we design then the way that we design shifts. "Use" is still there and as important as ever but a design then is not just about efficiency or utility. I would like to make a plea for — "Meaning-Centered Design.". My concern for this began some time ago when I read this article. The Birth of the User". You should read it. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Gary S. Dickson. Bloomington, IN, United States.

the icebox door: Fruits and Knowing
http://iceboxdoor.blogspot.com/2015/07/fruits-and-knowing.html
Wednesday, July 1, 2015. Them I accept it's possible that I am interpreting the phase wrong. It may well be in this case that "know" is equal to "recognize." But, even so, this idea that you can know someone by the things that they create has stuck in my mind. If it's true then what? I like examples. So, I will outline one here. It seems the answer in some way, shape, form or degree must be yes. I would be interested to hear what other people think about this. What is the upshot of all this? Hey Carl - y...

Tuesday, May 26, 2015. My Three Mutation Scenarios. I have done a great deal of participant observation in playtesting/design processes in the development of new designs. Over time I have observed three general ways that mutation occurs. I think that it is worthwhile to discuss these as it may be helpful to designers of all disciplines. There are no answers here. But, rather these perhaps can provide an interesting way to think about how we design. These two models that I have been using in the past seem...

Tuesday, May 29, 2012. Thursday, May 24, 2012. The Mystical Powers of The Designer - aka "Design Thinking". Once upon a time. Design thinking may be wrought with buzz or hype. But, maybe there is good reason for this. Do we work in mysterious ways? Sometimes. Examining design thinking provides us with an opportunity to better understand both our physical and cognitive process. This increased understanding can only be a good thing - allowing us to teach and practice more effectively. Saturday, May 5, 2012.

Thursday, July 23, 2015. Little Experiments and Small Mutations. Yes I have my obsessions and these drive most of my work. I suspect that most designers are pretty obsessive. To keep bouncing back and designing and redesigning over and over again one has to be obsessive and yes have that elastic ego. Monday, July 6, 2015. Wednesday, July 1, 2015. the icebox door: Greater Than Board Games
http://iceboxdoor.blogspot.com/2015/05/greater-than-board-games.html
Wednesday, May 20, 2015. Greater Than Board Games. I felt like we were alone together and I hated that feeling. Vicki loved games. Me. not so much. So, what happened that evening seemed extreme and shocking to me. Words came out of my mouth — something along the lines of, "let's go buy a couple of board games.". Thursday, August 21, 2014. Math in Board Game Design — Quick notes on Gen Con 2014. One interesting event we attended was a seminar called "The Basics of Tabletop Game Design." A question asked by someone in the audience was regarding whether or not they should consider hiring a mathematician to help develop their game. Nearly every one of the five designers on the panel enthusiastically agreed. "screw the math! Do not worry about the math. Math should never be a primary consideration! We can then if we ...
