http://torontodreamsproject.blogspot.com/2015/07/torontos-rebel-mayor-his-pirate-admiral.html
Wednesday, July 8, 2015. Toronto's Rebel Mayor and His Pirate Admiral. For his capture. So Mackenzie was forced to flee the city he loved, smuggled through the countryside by his supporters as gangs of angry Loyalists searched for him. He ran all the way south to Niagara, getting rowed across the river just a few minutes ahead of the men who had come to arrest him. He was lucky to escape Canada with his life. He would spend the next decade living in exile. He'd been born in Trois Rivières, but he grew up...

Saturday, December 27, 2014. My Twelve Most Favourite Posts from 2014. Plus, I made treks to Quebec City and Niagara Falls. I launched twelve new dreams this year, continued to write my column over at Spacing. And added new, musically-themed sticky plaques. To Toronto's grungy bar bathroom walls. So here we go:. Elizabeth Simcoe's 1794 Nightmare — The Story Behind One of Toronto's First Recorded Dreams. Down At Fraggle Rock. In Yorkville — The Muppets Take Toronto. How Toronto Helped Break Up The Beatles.

Thursday, April 30, 2015. The True Story of Toronto's Island Ghost. The story of John Paul Radelmüller came to a bloody end in Toronto, but it began more than six thousand kilometers away — in the royal courts of Europe. That's how Radelmüller ended up in England. He was a teenager when he got a job as a royal servant during the reign of "Mad" King George III. He attended to the king's younger brother, Prince William. This time, he served as a porter to one of the "mad" king's sons: Prince Edward. It did...

Wednesday, May 27, 2015. Toronto's Founding Dog and How He Almost Got Eaten. It was the summer of 1793. The summer our city was founded. On an early Tuesday morning, as the late July sun rose above Lake Ontario, a British warship sailed into Toronto Bay. She was the HMS Mississauga. She had sailed overnight from Niagara, arriving in darkness, waiting for dawn and a local fur trader. The Simcoes weren't alone. They had brought their pets with them. There was a white cat with grey spots. The Niagara River ...

Thursday, February 19, 2015. UK Tour Photos: The Blackdown Hills of Devon. I came to Devon to explore the Blackdown Hills as part of the Dreams Project's UK Tour last summer. I left dreams here for the Simcoes — and for Henry Scadding, who also grew up in these parts. I've already written a bit about it: a post about the ancient church where the Simcoes got married is here. There's a post about how they fell in love here. And, as always, you can follow me on Instagram at @todreamsproject.

Tuesday, September 30, 2014. William Lyon Mackenzie's Mission To London. The tyranny of democracy.". Sometimes, things even got violent. Years earlier, Mackenzie's home and business (in Toronto, still called York back then, on Front Street at Frederick) had been attacked. Toronto in the 1830s (King St. at Church). Five days later, the Tories kicked him out again. There was another by-election. And another landslide victory for the famous Reformer. Would be a landmark in the history of British democracy, ...

Thursday, August 20, 2015. Dream 25 "The Lightkeeper's Daughter" (Arabella Radelmüller, 1815). Arabella Radelmüller was the daughter of the first lightkeeper of the Gibraltar Point Lighthouse. He was murdered there in 1815; some people say his ghost still haunts it. Today, it's the second oldest lighthouse in Canada and the oldest building in Toronto still standing on the spot where it was built. You can read the full story of the lighthouse and Radelmüller's ghost here. Monday, August 17, 2015. 8212; is...
