With many issues, we understand their importance, but fail to grasp exactly how or why they happened or what we can do about them. The housing crisis is no different. For me, I only really began to understand what was going on once I started researching for this post (with a big help from this article. 8221; people are beginning to ask; they made bad choices and now they need to pay the consequences, right? This whole hous...

Friday, May 2, 2008. The Torch Reaches Canberra. All photos courtesy of Torstein Dale. Never in my life have I seen so many Chinese people. Though I suppose that’s not too hard seeing as I grew up on the east coast, nor have I ever actually been to. Yet, last Thursday, I found myself immersed in a Chinese sea, among hundreds of waving red and yellow flags, listening to the voices of thousands chanting slogans in their native tongue. The torch had made its way to Canberra. After another 50 meters, I saw a...

Tuesday, October 26, 2010. Abdulla vs. The Sandwich. That "no" erupts on instinct from the lips of a first grader. It starts at the back of the throat and forces the tongue against the roof of the mouth before bursting forward as a full-on whine. Eat it. You know the deal.". You have to eat.". This time the outburst is followed by a giggle. He's trying to turn this dance into a game. Abdulla," I say in an even tone as I squat down to eye level. "You're not leaving this classroom until you eat it.". So go...

Tuesday, July 20, 2010. So, when are you going to cut your hair? I've been asked that more times than I can count during the last two years. To be sure that I did not, in fact, look good with long hair. The picture on the left makes it look like my hair was uneven. It wasn't. I think I was tilting my head). To me, getting your hair cut is like ordering wine or describing how a car works. I feel like I should. Unfortunately, this experience was all to familiar. OK, so what are we doing today? Ah, the book...

Another Window: Mr. Wang's
http://anotherwindow.blogspot.com/2010/09/mr-wangs.html
Tuesday, September 14, 2010. All I wanted was Chinese food. And maybe some beer. The night started out simple enough. My flatmate, Phin (who moved in with Amaniel and I about a week after I got here), came into my room wondering what we should do for the evening. How about Mr Wang's? I asked him. Oh, how wrong we were.
