The Wilbraham and Monson Academy merged together in 1971, but originally the Monson Academy was founded in 1804 and the Wilbraham Academy was founded in 1817. まず、介護老人福祉施設特別養護老人ホーム、特養ですが、全国において施設数としては最多なのですが需要にたいして供給がまったく追いついていません。介護療養型医療施設(介護療養病床は、２０１１年度末 2012年3月末ですべてを廃止される方針が示されています。この廃止される既存の施設は、2008年5月に新たに発足した介護療養型老人保健施設新型老健を中核にしてその他の介護施設への転換がうながされる予定となっています。厚生労働省が上記のような方針を打ち出した後、介護療養型医療施設(介護療養病床を出た高齢者が介護老人保健施設老健に移る場合には、これまでのリハビリ施設としての老健の医療看護体制が比較的弱かった理由から、医療関係者を中心にして老健では患者の受け入れが難しく、行き場のない介護難民が大量に発生してしまうというような批判がこれまでも相次いで出されていたのです。そのため、厚生労働省は今後も介護老人保健施設老健における医療看護体制と機能を強化する必要性があるというような基本方針を示しました。
