History of the Town of South Bristol. A view of South Bristol village in the early 1900’s with the Summit House hotel atop the hill. Explorers arrived on the midcoast during the early 1500s. One such exploration is that of Giovanni da Verrazzano, who recorded trading with Indians in 1528 at Small Point, a few miles west of South Bristol, and then sailing among the islands and sheltered harbors northeast of there on his way back to France.
