I am the British knitwear designer Tracy Cox. I grew up in a household were someone was always making something. All the members of my family are very creative and practical; at family get-togethers, everyone always brings something to do. From an early age I developed exceptional creative abilities which has stood me in good stead ever since. Designed and created by Catchfire Design Limited.

I started designing for myself. Being petite, I tend to shape most of my designs to produce a well-tailored cut. Although knitted fabric is naturally stretchy, I like to see a well fitting garment. Not too tight and no lumps or bumps in the wrong places. I can be inspired by almost anything. A yarn texture sparks an association, or a colour stirs a memory. For years I have made mental notes of things I like; my inspiration comes naturally, and is almost an instinctive process.

I find plain straight knitting, although therapeutic, can be a little monotonous. When I design a garment I try to make the process interesting and the knitter eager to get to the next stage of the pattern. I like to combine my knitting with a variety of stitches, textures, colours, types of yarn and materials. When I work out stitch patterns Im looking for a complimenting balance. I use elements together for a reason. The eclectic approach is really poor design and amateurish.

As well as using traditional ways to construct knitted clothing, I also experiment with the shape of the garment. I use techniques more usually found in dressmaking, to produce an unusual effect. Everyone finds particular lines and shapes aesthetically pleasing; I use these regularly in my designs to lead the eye or to follow a natural body contour. I feel that a garment should complement your body. Theres nothing worse that a garment thats wearing the person.
