http://traditionalarctickayaks.com/locator_maps.htm

This map shows most of the former Northwest Territories. Four of our five trips took place in the area shown above. We paddled on the Nowleye, Kamilukuak, Dubawnt, Thelon, Kunwak, Kazan and the Caribou Rivers. This area is generally known as the Barrne Lands. This map shows the Horton River, the most westerly and the most northerly river we paddled. We started at Horton Lake and paddled to Franklin Bay.

I'm working on the Kunwak-Kazan River trip and trip journal. We paddled the big lakes and caught a lot of fish. That was a good trip. CLICK ON THE THUMBNAILS FOR PICTURES OF THESE TRIPS. The Caribou River, 1994. This was our first trip. We were very green and not prepared. For what we encountered on that trip, but we just kept at the job of getting down the river to get to our ride out. That was the object after all, get to the meeting place and get an airplane ride out. The Horton River, 1996.

Traditional Arctic Kayaks | Jim Rutzick

http://traditionalarctickayaks.com/about.htm

J im Rutzick, St. Paul, Minnesota, 1943. Plywood knock-off of a Greenland kayak and built it from plans that I found in Wooden Boat magazine. That kayak still used epoxy and there was sanding and fairing to do but it was much less than the canoe. This process was more appealing so I built several more kayaks using the stitch and glue and the tortured plywood techniques which are very nicely spelled out in The Kayak Shop. Looking for something else to build I happened upon Wolfgang Brinck’s.

A romantic watercolor depicting summer travel. An inuksuk on the Kunwak River. The Kunwak was regularly visited by the Inuit. Late evening on the Caribou River. The Caribou River starts just out of the trees. Stunted growth as it nears the Hudson Bay. The inuksuik were generally constructed on the river or lake's ridge line to stand out. Against the sky when viewed from the water. An unusual flat day on a big lake. We have very few pictures of these lakes when. Another flat day on another very big lake.

I hung the gunwales and ribs in my basement kayak dungeon workshop, where they collected cobwebs and sawdust for the next four or five years. We talked about her kayak occasionally. A Transportation Trade →. November 19, 2014. My friend, Michelle Forseth, and I teach a couple beginning sea kayaking classes each summer. A question that often arises is, What kind of kayak should I buy? Often enough this comes from a female, in her forties or fifties, who has not spent the past 20 years pumping iron. I’m guessing this kayak will mostly be used on calm lakes, with a very occasional outing on Lake Superior. So, a 60-pound fiberglass expedition kayak? I’m not trash-talking the Shear...

There’s the world of paying work and then there is the work you do for which no one has to pay. You’ll do it regardless. That’s what this is about. Over the years I’ve sold some boats and sold some books. The money was frosting on the cake. The truth is that it would have been tough to keep me from building the boats or writing the novels. I’m a boat builder. Inveterate might be one adjective that applies. Obsessed, my wife claims, might be another. You can find out more about the kayak business I run here. I’ve built 20 of these boats over the years. I’ve also built a stitch-and-glue kayak (fiberglass-covered panels of plywood cut and bent into a boat), repaired time-worn skin-on-frame boats, rebuilt a damaged cedar-and-canvas canoe, and rebuilt a neglected stripper canoe. April 22, 2014. Fishy toggles carved from cedar. What followed was another of those experiences that sloshes in the vast territory between satisfaction and disappointment. I’m here to say that canvas did not change my life. Waves on water: good. Waves on kayak skin: bad. As it turns out, canvas has much more texture than poly. The varnish created a miniature moonscape of rough peaks and valleys. I sanded it down between coats, which helped some but never resulted in an especially smooth surface&#...Right...

Fatman Returns →. June 4, 2014. My wife points out that there are many things you can do with wood. Replace the kitchen counters, for instance. Build a tool bin for the porch. Replace the rotting back stairs. No denying any of that. To quote Andrew Marvell, there’s world enough and time for those things. Or maybe there’s not. I don’t really care. I’m building another kayak. Be custom fitted to match your leg length and knee height. The price is $1500. Send me a note. Or call 651.757.7479. Time for Anothe...

Return To Red Mountain Archery. Thursday, April 15, 2010. Just imagine my shock and delight when Jami asked me to take her hunting while she was visiting.
