Transamerica 2011

An account of my attempt to cycle coast-to-coast across the USA, on the Transamerica Trail. Tuesday, 30 August 2011. Day 89: The end of an amazing adventure. Seaside to Astoria 17miles. My faithful steed, ready for one last day of action. Pretty soon I was approaching Astoria and crossing the long bridge into town. Astoria is a nice little town. There is a path all the way along the river, which is actually shared with a old trolley car route. Even had time for one final, funny road sign! On the way back...

Transamerica 2011: Day 74: Fossils and tough hills

http://transamerica2011.blogspot.com/2011/08/day-74-fossils-and-tough-hills.html

An account of my attempt to cycle coast-to-coast across the USA, on the Transamerica Trail. Monday, 15 August 2011. Day 74: Fossils and tough hills. Mount Vernon to Mitchell 66miles. I tell you what, this ride doesnt get any easier as I near the end! The entrance to Picture Gorge. Somewhere in the middle. And coming out the other side! Some other rock, name unknown! After getting back on the main route, I soon started today's climb! I caught, and overtook, 4 people (2 groups of 2) on the climb today!

Transamerica 2011: Day 76: MMMM, taste those miles

http://transamerica2011.blogspot.com/2011/08/day-76-mmmm-taste-those-miles.html

An account of my attempt to cycle coast-to-coast across the USA, on the Transamerica Trail. Wednesday, 17 August 2011. Day 76: MMMM, taste those miles. Prineville to Sisters 40miles. Simultaneously a small but big today. Small, because I only rode 40miles and it was pretty easy going. But big because I achieved a very important milestone. The title of this entry should give you a clue if you know your Roman numerals. So it very much feels like this is now the beginning of the home stretch. After all the ...

Transamerica 2011: Day 77: One last big push

http://transamerica2011.blogspot.com/2011/08/day-77-one-last-big-push.html

An account of my attempt to cycle coast-to-coast across the USA, on the Transamerica Trail. Thursday, 18 August 2011. Day 77: One last big push. Sisters to Eugene 94miles. It's good to see that I've still got it when required! An extremely pleasing, and enjoyable day of riding today. Set off from Sisters at about 7.45. I knew that I was hoping to make it to Eugene today, although it was a long day of riding. Belknap Crater: Directly under the Earth's moon. now! But with no trees to block the view, the vi...

Transamerica 2011: Day 75: One less hill left to do

http://transamerica2011.blogspot.com/2011/08/day-75-one-less-hill-left-to-do.html

An account of my attempt to cycle coast-to-coast across the USA, on the Transamerica Trail. Tuesday, 16 August 2011. Day 75: One less hill left to do. Mitchell to Prineville 48miles. Another pretty early start today. Hopefully I dont have too many of these left. Once I hit Eugene, my daily mileage requirement will hopefully be pretty low, so I can have some nice relaxed days. The German couple were the first to leave, and I set off about 7.30. How could I forget that one! They also thought it was the har...

Transamerica 2011: Day 83: Life's a beach

http://transamerica2011.blogspot.com/2011/08/day-83-lifes-beach.html

An account of my attempt to cycle coast-to-coast across the USA, on the Transamerica Trail. Wednesday, 24 August 2011. Day 83: Life's a beach. Today I faced the steepest climb of my entire trip. It was probably something like a 60-70% gradient. It was also a sand dune! The day started with Bryant and me getting breakfast at the Pelican bar (I'll feel like a bit of the furniture by the time I leave here tomorrow! And then once he set off I hit the beach! That's a lot of sand! It took so long to eat it was...
