Carlino's Corner: The Internet of Things
http://transitionadvisors.blogspot.com/2015/07/the-internet-of-things.html
Friday, July 24, 2015. The Internet of Things. In the summer of 1984 I was at a friend’s house whose wife worked at a large cosmetics company in the department that we now refer to as IT but was then known as data processing. In any event she was typing furiously on her new IBM PC and paused occasionally to laugh out loud. Curious I asked her what was so funny and she replied, “My friend is sending me dirty jokes.”. Fast forward 30 years or so. Tech consulting company Gartner. As the Internet of Things e...

Carlino's Corner: December 2014

Tuesday, December 16, 2014. Can You Return a Car Online? Each year the residents of Chez Carlino pledge to perform roughly 90 percent of holiday shopping online. But while one can sing the praises of avoiding throngs of bargain hunters and road rage duels over an available parking space, there are just some things that I cannot and will not buy online. Take cars for example. . Links to this post. Friday, December 12, 2014. That’s why it’s often more difficult to facilitate a merger between tw...In additi...

Carlino's Corner: Tired of Being Left in the Dark
http://transitionadvisors.blogspot.com/2015/07/tired-of-being-left-in-dark.html
Tuesday, July 28, 2015. Tired of Being Left in the Dark. Much like my expertise in technology, my knowledge of all things electrical extends just slightly behind the successful change of a light bulb. But sadly power outages are something I’m all too familiar with. And in recent years we’ve been treated such climatic events as Tropical Storm Irene in 2011 (out 3 days), a freak Halloween snowstorm just two months later (out 4 days) and the worst of all, Hurricane Sandy in 2012 (out 7 days). Since I work r...

Carlino's Corner: Four More Years?
http://transitionadvisors.blogspot.com/2015/08/four-more-years.html
Tuesday, August 11, 2015. One of the great satirical magazines of all time – MAD- once spoofed then-President Nixon’s historic visit to China with a bubble quote over the former chief executive’s head thinking “I’ve got to do something to take the country’s mind off high unemployment, inflation, Vietnam.etc.”. More affordable and reducing the escalating amount of student debt. Each month I receive the invoices for student loan repayments, so of course, I’ll listen. Her proposal unveiled at a town hall me...

Carlino's Corner: April 2015
http://transitionadvisors.blogspot.com/2015_04_01_archive.html
Tuesday, April 28, 2015. Where are those surveys when you really want them? Over the past week, between flying, rental cars, purchasing technology components and then remaining on hold for 30 minutes with tech support and even shopping for a new pair of jeans, I’ve been asked to complete no less than five customer surveys. Last week my travel experience to a large Midwestern city rivaled the latter. . Links to this post. Friday, April 17, 2015. About two years ago, I read one of the more interesting book...

Carlino's Corner: January 2015
http://transitionadvisors.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html
Friday, January 30, 2015. No, Sir, That Speeding Ticket is Not Deductible! I have two annual rituals I exercise on Super Bowl Sunday. The first is to turn down any party invitation to watch the big game. For one, I’m not a huge fan of wings or pigs in a blanket – the two menu staples everyone who has ever hosted a Super Bowl party throws at you like confetti. Second, more often than not, the game rarely lives up to its fortnight of hype. I offer last year’s 43-8 massacre as Exhibit A. Links to this post.
