Lise McIntyre was raised on a farm in the most northeastern part of Missouri, where she was exposed to the collecting of objects at an early age. Her grandfather was a coin dealer and her grandmother gathered antique spoons. Their interest and pleasure in these activities made an impact, and underscored how having a hobby can enhance the pleasure of life. Her early collecting interests included dolls and dollhouse furniture, but over the years, she honed in on buttons and that is where her passion bloomed.
