He was quite a character really. When we met him for the first time in 1971, he was already past 55, and looked more like 65 really. He was not very tall, dressed very simply, slightly bent, with watery blue-green eyes, and a kindly face. Over the years, as we kept talking, the story of his life came to light slowly.

Our trip to Bolivia took us into enormous heights. We visited Isla del Sol on Lake Titicaca, went trekking in the Illampu massive and in the Condoriri group – both part of the Cordillera Real, and followed the Inca trail "El Chorro". The definitive highlight of our trip was climbing Huayna Potosi – our first peak over 6.000 meters. Further we explored the Thar Desert in Rajasthan on the back of camels and visited Jaisalmer, Jodhpur and the Taj Mahal in Agra.
