Sunday, January 23, 2011. A Farewell Trip - Part IV. Every year at year-end, Martha and I list our personal awards, in categories such as best book, best movie, best trip, best weekend, best new place, best new person, best new discovery, and most important goal accomplished. We usually do this in the course of a long phone conversation. This was a chance to do it in person! It was still a long conversation. And then I was looking at the paper and I noticed that Rodney Yee, the star of the yoga DVDs that...

The Further Adventures...: Retreat and Renewal

http://travelsintheoffseason.blogspot.com/2011/01/retreat-and-renewal.html

Wednesday, January 19, 2011. Now I’ll close the book on 2010 – and at some point will reopen it to chronicle my Vietnam trip and Amtrak Across America! I’ll be starting another blog in the meantime. In the Philippines I just couldn’t write about being there and also my travels in the off-season. Will I be able to in Armenia? Good old rock and roll. I saw other friends for lunch, dinner and coffee in New York, and saw the Rockefeller Center tree and skated in Central Park. Hosted Steve, Elisa and fami...

The Further Adventures...: A Farewell Trip - Part I

http://travelsintheoffseason.blogspot.com/2011/01/farewell-trip-part-i.html

Thursday, January 20, 2011. A Farewell Trip - Part I. Southwest announced a sale just before Thanksgiving; I thought it would be fun to have a quick visit to see a friend or two before departing for Armenia. I couldn’t decide among Chicago, the Bay Area and Los Angeles – so I did all three! And somehow I missed some major snowstorms and had all-but-one on-time flights. It has windows with beautiful natural light. Now that I think of it, maybe it does have a light? Why are there are still so many? Definit...

The Further Adventures...: November 2010

http://travelsintheoffseason.blogspot.com/2010_11_01_archive.html

Wednesday, November 24, 2010. Recent Doings Around Here - Part II. Then it got even closer – that total was based on precincts phoning in the tallies; the actual tallies showed a 300-vote lead for the opponent. That meant opening 10,000 absentee ballots – which they are still doing – and possibly a total recount. I have my fingers crossed! I went to a Restorative Yoga class at the Rogers Memorial Library and loved it! And last week I went to the Peace Corps office in downtown Manhattan; while I was in th...

The Further Adventures...: December 2010

http://travelsintheoffseason.blogspot.com/2010_12_01_archive.html

Friday, December 31, 2010. The B at the B&B was great – pancakes filled with cream cheese blended with strawberry juice and topped with strawberries. Between that and a chatty owner, I didn’t get an early start, but that’s part of the charm of staying in B&Bs. And then it was on to Arches National Park! This is a great National Park – five stars! Thursday, December 30, 2010. Park City to Moab. If so, that’s way too long – must return soon! It was more important to spend time with friends anyway. Cath...

The Further Adventures...: Frank Lloyd Wright and the Pentagon Memorial

http://travelsintheoffseason.blogspot.com/2011/01/frank-lloyd-wright-and-pentagon.html

Monday, January 17, 2011. Frank Lloyd Wright and the Pentagon Memorial. There’s a Frank Lloyd Wright house in Alexandria; it had been on my list for a while, and on Sunday morning Steve, Elisa and I headed over there! As is often the case with Frank Lloyd Wright houses, we had an enthusiastic and knowledgeable tour guide. And the next day Elisa took me to the airport, where I rented a car and drove south. What a wonderful visit! Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Mekong River, Laos. I set up “Trav...

Tuesday, July 12, 2011. New Work and Old Favorites. My counterpart retuned from vacation and now I have a bunch of new things to do! V=U0EccFAUDKU&feature=player embedded. Also, my gender article was the lead story in the latest bulletin - http:/ mca.am/files/publications/13079458990.pdf. UNDP wants to reprint the article, so I may expand it. That was fine too. Armenia Dreamin': A Few of my Favorite Things - Part II

http://armeniadreamin.blogspot.com/2011/07/few-of-my-favorite-things-part-ii.html

Tuesday, July 26, 2011. A Few of my Favorite Things - Part II. Sunday night, I went to the closing orchestra concert of the season, a Tchaikovsky concert with a cello soloist. The 1812 Overture may never have sounded better; I teared up a bit there too. It’s been great to see so many concerts here! And Will, the A-14 is back in town. If all went smoothly, he’s now a married man – congratulations and best wishes to the happy couple. I did my interview with the MCA-Armenia CEO yesterday. That went well!

Armenia Dreamin': May 2011

Monday, May 30, 2011. More from Culture Smart - Tidbits. A phenomenon of some supermarkets (such as the one I usually go to! Is the retail “hoverers” who shadow you up and down the aisles (I am glad I read about this so I knew to expect it! Have I talked about dress? And most people do seem fit, though I have seen plenty of non-trim people as well. And where do all of these people go? And, I just found out, it has air-conditioning). Saturday, May 28, 2011. Friday, July 29, 2011. The Past Six Months in Haiku. It’s east of Turkey. Another Peace Corps Response. 301 AD – quite proud. Poor country, problems. As elsewhere, but some unique. Peace Corps here to help. Bri, Gordon, Jeanne, me. Major stress for oh, six weeks. Glad it could be fixed. Orders, craft fairs, overload. Trip to Syunik marz. Meghri, Kapan and Goris. Assessed needs and skills. A good Response assignment. Basics, numbers and letters. New job – MCA. Right up my alley! Lots of work events. Welco...

Armenia Dreamin': Potpourri

http://armeniadreamin.blogspot.com/2011/07/potpourri.html

Sunday, July 3, 2011. I also hope nothing happens while David is the Country Director; he had a lot to deal with in Morocco. I mentioned this to a friend, who said she kind of hopes something does happen for our Safety and Security Coordinator, who is so prepared! With all the wildflowers here, I bet the honey is great. I read recently that Armenia is the only former Soviet Republic with a nearly homogeneous population – of course the Azeris left during the conflict, but right after independenc...Maybe t...

Armenia Dreamin': Weekend in Kapan

http://armeniadreamin.blogspot.com/2011/07/weekend-in-kapan.html

Thursday, July 7, 2011. I might not have had my computer with me when I fell. What if I had decided not to go into the pharmacy to look for something Brian said he wanted? I might not have slipped and fallen. How would my first six weeks here - nay, my entire service - have been different? So, what if I had gone to Vanadzor this weekend? She might not have fallen. What if she had taken a taxi to the marchutny instead of the walk that included those stairs? Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Armenia Peac...

http://armeniadreamin.blogspot.com/2011/07/few-of-my-favorite-things-part-i.html

Monday, July 25, 2011. A Few of my Favorite Things - Part I. As if I don’t go to Artbridge often enough in Yerevan. But they do have my favorite iced coffee, and nice light meals, so it was a perfect place for lunch. Of course, I haven’t seen it in winter. When I got back to Yerevan, I had dinner outdoors at the Jazzve in Opera Square, and then climbed the Cascade – even with a drizzle, there was a nice Ararat view (just after I’d said I hadn’t seen it lately! Armenia Dreamin': Site Announcement

http://armeniadreamin.blogspot.com/2011/07/site-announcement.html

Saturday, July 9, 2011. We next split up by region and the current PCVs described their sites to the PCTs. I joined the Central Region group and discussed some (non-bar, non-restaurant) things people could do in Yerevan; these guys are close enough to come in for the day. I also put in plugs for Zina’s Bed and Breakfast, Peace Corps Response and Millennium Challenge! Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Welcome to Armenia Dreamin'. travels in the future

Space travel on less than $50,000 a day. Reading time 6.5 minutes *. About now, we should be standing on a balcony in a space hotel, looking down on the curved soap bubble we know from photographs as the atmosphere of Earth. We should be wearing one piece suits made from Lycra and drinking exotic cocktails which as well as being chromatically vivid would contain bobbing morsels of something genetically engineered. I am a wannabe orphan of Apollo. The investment in the space shuttle ensured its dominance ...
