We've been trained to recognize certain procedures ( proof by cases. To name a few) as valid methods of proof. Or rules of inference. You might wonder, then, as I did, what it is that makes all these different procedures valid. It seems safer to trust one procedure than to trust many procedures. Wouldn't it be more pleasing to have one single, fundamental, unified proof-algorithm, simple and elegant, but powerful enough to express any valid derivation?
