How Strange It Is To Be Anything At All: New Orleans Lady

How Strange It Is To Be Anything At All. Jump to Facebook page. Sunday, May 10, 2015. As I've mentioned here before, my goal has always been to use this blog to write about more than just music. It being Mother's Day - and almost 10 years since my own Mom died as an evacuee from Hurricane Katrina - I realized that I've never published the piece I wrote about my Mom here on How Strange It Is. But my mother’s life in. With the rekindling of her Catholic faith, she sometimes worried about her imperfections&...

Members of the White Rose, L to R: Hans Scholl, Sophie Scholl, and Christoph Probst. I had never heard of the White Rose. Until yesterday, when something ran across my facebook page. The White Rose ( Der weissen Rose. Like a 25-year-old Patton Oswalt. Smell of Dead Fish, Trailer Trash. But I still felt a part of this community. I saw the need to contribute in my ow...

How Strange It Is To Be Anything At All. Jump to Facebook page. Wednesday, October 8, 2014. Whatever Brains / Alex G / Silent Lunch - Kosher Hut, Raleigh (10/3/14). In July, I wrote here that at the last Mattress Fort show in Raleigh, "Someone asked me if I thought this could happen again, if someone else would start up a good 'unofficial' music venue. Of course they will. They always do. It’s irrepressible.". The show was set to be Raleigh's Whatever Brains. And Durham's Silent Lunch. Silent Lunch kicke...

How Strange It Is To Be Anything At All. Jump to Facebook page. Thursday, November 6, 2014. T0W3RS - TL;DR (Phuzz Records). When Derek Torres decided to strike out on his own and make T0W3RS. A solo project, I was somewhat dubious, and I expressed as much on this blog. I always support an artist being open to change; to me, stagnation can render even my favorite music boring. But T0W3RS were possibly my favorite local band. If All We Have Is Time. Don’t mess with yer sound, man! But you know what? To giv...

How Strange It Is To Be Anything At All. Jump to Facebook page. Saturday, April 25, 2015. The Kneads – Letting You Let Me Down (PotLuck Foundation/Records). Greensboro’s The Kneads. Are a band haunted by ghosts of the past… specifically early to mid ‘90s indie ghosts. And that’s fine by me, because for all that era’s resurgence in popularity, I’ve heard few new bands actually continuing to mine the vein. Their debut CD, Letting You Let Me Down. Great title, btw), on Durham’s PotLuck. And a few other plac...

How Strange It Is To Be Anything At All: Here Comes the Summer, Darlin’: Free Clinic – Wait It Out

How Strange It Is To Be Anything At All. Jump to Facebook page. Friday, May 8, 2015. Here Comes the Summer, Darlin’: Free Clinic – Wait It Out. I don’t know what it is. Being from a beach town (Wilmington, NC), maybe it’s in their blood. Maybe they absorb the salt from the air, osmotically. But when I hear FreeClinic. I instantly think waves and sun and sand. I, too, have saltwater in my veins, so I have a nose for these things. Oh, maybe it’s also the “ooohs”. And “aaahs”. Free Clinic definitely has tha...

Saw just a down-home rock'n'roll show at King’s last weekend. No Eyes. And the Love Language. At least that I’ve seen; but then I wasn't watching'em in Greensville in 2008. But they rocked so much I almost believed the onstage joke that guitarist Andy Holmes was playing remotely backstage (I even checked J. It’s sickening, really.

So I snuck away from the Jphono1/Lakes&Woods 12"release show at the Cradle Backroom (more on that later) to finally see SOON. Being a fan of the soaring pop of the Love Language. I was always intrigued to see what a band made half from them (Stu McLamb and drummer Thomas Simpson), and half from vets of local metal bands GROHG. Mark Connor) and Bitter Resolve.
