all kinds of yum: Real Talk 1: Gratitude
http://tannazie.blogspot.com/2014/02/real-talk-1-gratitude.html
Thoughts on food and life from a sunny kitchen in los angeles. Tuesday, February 18, 2014. Real Talk 1: Gratitude. I've been hearing people talk about gratitude a lot lately. I think this bodes well for society (or whatever overeducated, overprivileged, over-yoga'ed, over-TED-talked corner of society I happen to run in). We're rising above the mundane. We're working on big ideas. Gratitude has been a theme on this blog since the early days. Some moments I had it, and with good reason. Naps naps. naps.

all kinds of yum: On Air Raid Sirens and Apple Pie
http://tannazie.blogspot.com/2008/12/on-air-raid-sirens-and-apple-pie.html
Thoughts on food and life from a sunny kitchen in los angeles. Monday, December 01, 2008. On Air Raid Sirens and Apple Pie. A funny thing happens at Thanksgiving. Maybe it's something in the turkey, maybe it's just a by-product of dusting off old food traditions, cooking and eating with family, but something about Thanksgiving makes people tell stories. A KitchenAid, plus cooking a ton of food with my sister - what more could I ask for? Well, Grandma Nanny's apple pie. It's been a rough year for my siste...

all kinds of yum: Happy Norouz to You!
http://tannazie.blogspot.com/2007/03/happy-norouz-to-you.html
Thoughts on food and life from a sunny kitchen in los angeles. Tuesday, March 20, 2007. Happy Norouz to You! Today, the first day of spring, is Persian New Year. I'd rather actually enjoy it than write about it, so I'm going to point over some other sources. Above is my more modern take on haftsinn. The traditional table setting of seven (' haft. Symbolic items that start with the Persian letter sinn. You can learn more about each of these seven items in this beautiful post. From Fig and Quince. Tannazie...

all kinds of yum: Maple Apple Yogurt Cake
http://tannazie.blogspot.com/2014/11/maple-apple-yogurt-cake.html
Thoughts on food and life from a sunny kitchen in los angeles. Wednesday, November 19, 2014. Maple Apple Yogurt Cake. I think I'm gonna write a manifesto. Mein Cake. Hear me out. I feel like there are constantly people who are trying to tell you that you can muck around with recipes when you're cooking on the stove, but when you're baking, God help you if stray a hair from the recipe: your cake will explode, your friends will turn on you, and you'll have bad sex for seven years. But most importantly, if ...

http://tannazie.blogspot.com/2015/01/real-talk-3-accountability.html
Thoughts on food and life from a sunny kitchen in los angeles. Thursday, January 15, 2015. Real Talk 3: Accountability. Part 3 in a series. I've employed some practices, and have had some things on my mind, that I'm really excited about, and I'd like to share them here. Not all directly food- nor LA-related, though food certainly weaves through these stories. I'm calling it Real Talk, though in a less lofty moment, I could just as well have called it Better Living Through Google Docs. My issues with the ...

all kinds of yum: Scenes from an Iranian-American Passover Seder
http://tannazie.blogspot.com/2015/04/scenes-from-iranian-american-passover.html
Thoughts on food and life from a sunny kitchen in los angeles. Saturday, April 04, 2015. Scenes from an Iranian-American Passover Seder. I failed to take my good camera with me to my parents' house last night, but I had to share some quick phone snaps. It occurs to me how unfamiliar a lot of people are with the Passover dinner that I know. Nary a brisket, matzoh ball, or jellied, goopy ball of gefilte fish in sight. Here are a few shots from my parents' house last night. Note that Iranian Jewish nargesi,...

all kinds of yum: The Book, Auntie Mohtaram, and One Last Category
http://tannazie.blogspot.com/2006/06/book-auntie-mohtaram-and-one-last.html
Thoughts on food and life from a sunny kitchen in los angeles. Sunday, June 25, 2006. The Book, Auntie Mohtaram, and One Last Category. I have a personal project, to which I've only barely alluded on this blog. It's just the beginning, and I'm a little nervous about saying things like "I'm writing a book," when I'm not totally sure it's gonna happen (in the same way, when you're 16, you don't tell your friends you're taking the driving test until the license is in your hands. too scary! Before we left, s...

all kinds of yum: We Jumped Over Fire
http://tannazie.blogspot.com/2011/03/we-jumped-over-fire.html
Thoughts on food and life from a sunny kitchen in los angeles. Wednesday, March 16, 2011. We Jumped Over Fire. I celebrate new years three times every year: our western one, in the middle of freezing cold winter, Rosh Hashana, which lands in fall, and the one that has always seemed the most right to me, Norouz, Persian New Year, celebrated on the first day of spring. It's a celebration redolent of sweet rebirth. Somehow this particular tradition - a holiday known as Chaharshanbe Soori. As we sat on Saba'...
