August 22, 2016. September 11, 2016. So when we finally got helped to my surprise Linda converted her credit on the lay-away revolver and applied it to the Helwan! I protested, but she said I had plenty of guns she could shoot, and I’d already put together a lovely revolver for her. Besides, she still hadn’t gotten me an anniversary present. Gotta love that woman. We picked up some ammo and took the Helwan home. It works and it’s easy to operate. 12-gauge Loads for Home-Defense? Leave a Reply Cancel reply.

2017- Plans for the Coming Year – tinker talks guns
https://tinkertalksguns.wordpress.com/2017/01/06/2017-plans-for-the-coming-year
2017- Plans for the Coming Year. January 6, 2017. S&W M1903 .32 Hand-ejector- refinished with a custom grip adapter. Coming soon- stag grips and perhaps a barrel shortened to 2-1/2 to 3″. The old saying is, ‘Man makes plans, God Laughs.” Well, we’ll see how that works out in 2017. I have decided, to much snickering from those who know me, that the best thing I can do to advance my gun hobby is to. Run a 220V line to the shop and install a 3-phase converter to get the milling machine running, which will r...

The Hi-Point of Impulse Purchases – tinker talks guns

The Hi-Point of Impulse Purchases. March 19, 2016. So last summer we found ourselves temporarily living near Tacoma and, being us, we soon happened across the local gun shop and shooting range. We popped in to check the place out and while looking through the pistol case I spotted a .40 S&W Hi Point pistol. To say that this is not a gun that appeals to me would be an understatement. Ugly, bulky, heavy and cheap. Out of idle curiosity I looked at the price tag- $75. Uh, what? I have to admit that after ex...

.22 Magnum Pistol Build (Part 2) – tinker talks guns
https://tinkertalksguns.wordpress.com/2016/11/11/22-magnum-pistol-build-part-2
22 Magnum Pistol Build (Part 2). November 11, 2016. Between doing things that actually make money I got a few more hours in on this project. Having a bit more experience this time around is making a difference; this one is going rather faster than previous builds. The work shown here was spread out over a couple of evenings, though some odd small bits were done while glue was drying. Sideplate mounted. the screws will be recessed and shortened, then slotted later in the build. Leave a Reply Cancel reply.

‘Break-in Period-‘ WTF? – tinker talks guns
https://tinkertalksguns.wordpress.com/2016/06/06/break-in-period-wtf/comment-page-1
8216;Break-in Period-‘ WTF? June 6, 2016. Of these guns eventually settled down and became reliable. The rational for this ‘break-in’ period was that these guns were manufactured to tighter tolerances and needed to ‘wear in.’ I’m well-known for speaking my mind- in other words without thinking- so I said, “So basically you charge a premium price, then draft your customers to finish the pistol for you. That sounds like a pretty good deal for you guys.”. He looked gobsmacked, then a thoughtful. The manufac...

Gilding a Turd: Hi-Point Mods. – tinker talks guns

Gilding a Turd: Hi-Point Mods. December 30, 2016. The Hi-Point pistols have two defining characteristics- they are cheap and they work. Mostly. The broad consensus is that they are a turd, and best used as a boat-anchor. As I stated previously I never anticipated owning one, but $75 (used) for a service-caliber handgun with a lifetime guarantee? So, my change of perspective- am I a HiPoint fan-boy? It goes without saying that they aren’t perfect out of the box- they were never intended to be perfec...

22 Magnum Pistol Build (Part 3). November 15, 2016. November 15, 2016. This is the ‘home-stretch’ of this build. Lot’s done, and little left to do at the end of it. Side-plate and mainspring in place. This view shows the parts, including the trigger and trigger return spring in place. The trigger is actually the piece v=cut our of the frame for the trigger. Here is the hammer In the cocked position. The half-cock notch is recessed so that the trigger cannot be pulled. After the sights are mounted I’...

22 Magnum Pistol Build (Part 1). November 9, 2016. The next build is… Surprise! A single shot pistol! First step- carefully cut out the outline of the gun and trace it onto .262″ 5160 Spring-steel with a Sharpy-marker. This includes the shape of the barrel as that finished shape, thickness etc. has yet to be determined at this point. Here’s a shot of the sketch showing a rough idea of the mechanism. The hammer-spur has been cut off so I can trace the shape of the frame. I haven’t decided whether to...

November 2016 – tinker talks guns
https://tinkertalksguns.wordpress.com/2016/11
Livin’ the Puglife. November 29, 2016. November 29, 2016. It’s a fair question, I suppose. The tempting response is, ‘If you don’t get it I can’t explain it.’ That’s a bit of a cop-out though, isn’t it? 8217; What if someone living in the 19th C. wanted a full-frame .44 as a concealed carry weapon? Shat would they base it on, what would it look like and be like to shoot? There’s nothing wrong with that, of course; I only dimly understand the idea of taking a utilitarian service pistol and turning i...
