En Trujillo esta ubicada la Fortaleza de Santa Bárbara, a mediados del siglo XV hubo constantes ataques por parte de piratas, ingleses, franceses y holandeses que querían apoderarse de la riqueza que en ese tiempo tenían los españoles.Por dichos ataques los españoles vieron la necesidad de construir esta fortaleza que estaba armada de pequeños cañones pero con gran alcance con lo que defendieron las costas de Trujillo. Fue de los primeros puertos de Honduras debido a su fácil acceso en el mar Caribe por la zona denominada Punta Caxinas donde actualmente esta ubicada una de las Bases Navales.
