The second first quarter | Culture Shock
https://czinamerica.wordpress.com/2014/10/18/the-second-first-quarter
Chuan-Zheng discovers America. (Standard opinion disclaimers apply.). The second first quarter. One year ago today. Drowning in a sea of coursework and ruthlessly dragged along by the high-speed train of graduate school, I wrote, if I may quote myself, that “there must be at least some element of masochism in anyone who voluntarily stays around here.” That suspicion turned out to be correct, perhaps even a mild understatement. The introductory electrical engineering class I’m helping teach this qua...
Trois jours à Montréal | Culture Shock
https://czinamerica.wordpress.com/2014/09/03/trois-jours-a-montreal
Chuan-Zheng discovers America. (Standard opinion disclaimers apply.). Trois jours à Montréal. Montreal is gorgeous. Whether it was the city’s countless activities, seamless bilingualism, urban design or general buzz I don’t know, but for the whole three days, my fascination with it never stopped. Most likely, it was all of the above. Bonjour, ça va? Ça va bien, merci. Oui, une table pour deux. Qqch que je n’ai pas compris cette table-là qqch attend qqch. Nous attendons pendant…. Do you speak English?
Getting a California driver’s licence | Culture Shock
https://czinamerica.wordpress.com/2014/08/13/getting-a-california-drivers-licence
Chuan-Zheng discovers America. (Standard opinion disclaimers apply.). Getting a California driver’s licence. Californians don’t speak very highly of their Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). Today, I saw for myself why. 12:24 pm: Just a few drivers ahead of me. 1:31 pm: Nearly at the front! Thankfully, if this is a theme, it doesn’t seem to be to this degree. The Social Security Office involved long waits, but nothing like this and the staff seemed happy to help. What’s a resident? This is a question I&#...
Keeping afloat | Culture Shock
https://czinamerica.wordpress.com/2013/10/18/keeping-afloat
Chuan-Zheng discovers America. (Standard opinion disclaimers apply.). I’m generally mindful of what I write on this blog, for several reasons, but mainly a reluctance to portray an exchange experience in negative light. What follows is a waiver of that rule. In truth, work here’s been pretty rough. No,. Yale IV was lots of fun, but after I got back it increasingly felt like a mistake, despite its being on just the second weekend of the quarter. (This won’t stop me from going to another debate t...It̵...
Toronto, Ontario | Culture Shock
https://czinamerica.wordpress.com/2014/12/24/toronto-ontario
Chuan-Zheng discovers America. (Standard opinion disclaimers apply.). But it turns out that Canada Goose is a popular (and obscenely expensive) brand of outerwear, famous because they provide jackets for Canadian Arctic explorers. On my first weekday here, with my sister at work, I did what I normally do after arriving in a new city: wander around the CBD/city centre/downtown to get a feel for what’s going on. You would think I’d have learnt from my experience in Los Angeles. I also toured Ontario’...
Post-orientation | Culture Shock
https://czinamerica.wordpress.com/2013/09/21/post-orientation
Chuan-Zheng discovers America. (Standard opinion disclaimers apply.). Whether this is true I don’t know. People who go to Stanford don’t really think of things as nice-to-haves, so are likely to give that impression. Also, the students most eager to help are probably the ones most likely to think that way too. Taking initiative is always. Anxious I become. There’s a growing temptation just to go with the flow, but that sounds like a known recipe for failure. Is prohibited by the. The code was written by ...
A few hours in Los Angeles | Culture Shock
https://czinamerica.wordpress.com/2013/08/25/a-few-hours-in-los-angeles
Chuan-Zheng discovers America. (Standard opinion disclaimers apply.). A few hours in Los Angeles. I probably picked the wrong time of day (Sunday afternoon/evening) or part of town, but there was substantially less activity in Los Angeles than I might have imagined. So in killing time, I roamed around a relatively unexciting downtown. A return ticket (in the context of ground transport) is called a “round-trip” ticket here. Hard to get into the habit of looking left first when you cross the road.

Tipping and taxing | Culture Shock
https://czinamerica.wordpress.com/2013/09/15/tipping-and-taxing
Chuan-Zheng discovers America. (Standard opinion disclaimers apply.). The practice of tipping is proving rather trickier to navigate than I anticipated, for three reasons. I thought it all made sense, but an ambiguity in my understanding hit me by surprise. I was at a café where you order at the counter, then take a number and find a table. So there wasn’t a waiter assigned to provide service, but food was brought to me. Does that count? I haven’t figured this out, but we’ve ended up advising...With time...
Columbus, Ohio | Culture Shock
https://czinamerica.wordpress.com/2014/09/16/columbus-ohio
Chuan-Zheng discovers America. (Standard opinion disclaimers apply.). Even with my time there lasting just one-and-a-half days, so I wasn’t expecting to be spoilt for must-sees, and I was right. But that wasn’t the point. Just being in the area fascinated me, as being in new places often does. Foreigners are often taken aback by the abundance of American flags on display ( see #2. Bricks bricks bricks bricks bricks. Perhaps a more modern take on Columbus’ favourite building material. The Statehouse has a...

Trying to regain control of my life! This is a journal of my attempt to get back in shape and change my life. Saturday, February 14, 2009. Yesterday I got a call from Scott. He was on his cell phone, as usual. Half way through our conversation he asked me to hold on and this is what I heard;. Girl at drive thru; “Welcome to McDonalds, may I take your order? Scott; “Yeah, give me two double cheeseburgers, a small fry, and a coke.”. Girl at drive thru; “Would you like a hot apple pie with that? I think tha...
