Thinking Out Loud: November 2006

Saturday, November 04, 2006. Two fundamental things to prove:. An ensemble average over all QM states is the same as an ensemble average over all states of a complete eigenbasis. The trace of an operator is basis-independent. Any basis? Or just orthogonal bases? Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). View my complete profile.

Irrelevant Innocence: 2006-09-10

Saturday, September 16, 2006. What's the best way to find good produce? Posted by rz at 1:13 PM. Sunday, September 10, 2006. How does one find out if one is talented? In music it is easy. Just listen to what you play. Does it sound good? Does it paint a picture? Are all the scales used properly? Do people like it? And really, the first and last ones are all there is to it. Computer science is a bit trickier, but it also seems doable. Can you write code that is bug-free? Nonetheless, I can't get myself to...

Monday, November 06, 2006. Not so strung out! Amidst all the media attention and all the bashing string theory has been getting lately this. Is a refreshing view of the current landscape of theoretical physics. A.J usually writes pretty interesting stuff on his blog. And interestingly enough his textbook recommendations. Come up as the third result on a google search. Let my own ignorance and undergraduate arrogance speak, though: I do think that string theory gets a bit too much attention (and funding?

Thinking Out Loud: unlimited cellphone
http://rztol.blogspot.com/2006/10/unlimited-cellphone.html
Tuesday, October 31, 2006. Why are there no providers that give unlimited cellphone usage for a flat fee. There is even such a thing for data on a cell phone. Could it be b/c the business is in people going over their minutes? Or because the bandwidth costs would be too high if people used their phone too much. More interesting question: how much bandwidth does a cell-to-cell conversation take? The business then would be text messaging. =). Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). How Id teach a class.

Thinking Out Loud: How I'd teach a class
http://rztol.blogspot.com/2006/10/how-id-teach-class.html
Saturday, October 14, 2006. How I'd teach a class. Make all lecture notes available and discourage note-taking in class. Have lecture twice a week on UH an informal optional session (Imamura's E&M stlye). Treat lecture like a discussion section during which the formalism is developed by the class. That is, I'm merely leading in the sense of determinig what should be done next, not the usual instructor talks and writes derivations on the chalkboard. Traditional final (ie as scheduled by registrar). If I a...

Sunday, October 15, 2006. Collect videos and calculate an average (over the different clips) time t0 of fall of the buildings. Calculate t from y = 0.5gt 2 (y is height of bldng). Compare those two numbers, the 2nd places a lower bound on the time of fall. How close does that make the 2nd number to the average obtained from the clips? Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).
