Tour of New Zealand 2010. Exploring South Island by bicycle. 5 March, 2010. Had a late start from Greymouth, was delayed by organizing boat back to Wellington, and doing touristy things like looking around town. Highway 6 was surprisingly quiet along the coast, I don’t know why that is as it is probably one of the most spectacular sections of coastal roads that I’ve traveled on in the south island. At Punakaiki I stopped at the Pancake stacks which were truly unique. Distance today: 82.29Km. 4 March, 2010.

We spotted quite a few cyclists, some on the Sunday club run, but most on the road were touring. The pic above is of a chap cycling in the opposite direction, I think he was French, not too sure as he didn’t stop, but had a French accent, maybe he was yet another French-Canadian. Tour of New Zealand 2010. Exploring South Island by bicycle. For this tour I used a Thorn. Raven Tour with the infamous Rohloff hub. Apart from a new chain and set of tires it’s the same one I used for my ride across the USA. Plenty of written material about the RT and Rohloff hubs can be found on the web. The Thorn Raven Tour is a great all round bike. It may be a bit over-built for setting records but it’s a nice bike for touring. I find it comfortable and it works! Rims: Sun Ringle CR18.
